WOMEN CONDUCTORS WILL BE THE NEXT Connecticnt Company Preparing to Enlist Service of Females New Haven.—Because of the Scar- city of men who are willing to work as conductors and motormen on the trolley ‘cars, the Connecticut company will sgon seriously consider the em- ployment of women trolley conduc- tok. This was stated by one of the managers of the Connecticut company yesterday ‘afternoon, while explain- ing the lna.dqqugte seryice given ‘the city of New 'Haven. Already one school teacher has ap- plied ' for work 'during extra hours, but she was given no definite answer. It was stated, however, that the em- ployment of wbmen would be the only solution for the scarcity of men. ‘The Interborough Rapid Transit com- pany of New York is trying.the plan, and the women guards in the New York subway are broving quite as ef- ficient as the men they supplemented. Not_lack of cars, or fuel, but lack of crews to mah the cars was the sole mson advanced by the trolley company yesterday for the poor:serv- ice the public is complaining against. On most of the lines, the cars .are crowded before they reach the cor- ner of Churc¢h and Chapel streets, and during rush hours all cars are jam- med to more than double their ca- pacity. This is especially true of the Win- chester line and other lines patron- ized By shop people, where regular and reliable service is needed more than in residential sections. Added to the poor service, the hundreds who | formetly rode in jitneys are now back’ in the trolley cars since Jack F'-ost ! chased the jitneys off the streets. $2,000 Stolen. Hartford.—The theft of more than | $2,000 from a Shelter street board- ing house was reported to the police. Gerneda, who lost $1,962, John Lut- kiensez, $300, and Harry ‘Wilgogki, $100. Man Hangs Self. Southington.—Frank Bernes, aged 83, hanged himself to the bed post in his room, using a belt, today. ALL WILL HAVE MARKERS No Excuse for Using 1917 Auto Li- ccnses After January 1 Hartford, Dec. 28.—The State Mo- tor Vehicle Department is keeping up to i(_s daily work and all registrations applied for are promptly issued and the corresponding markers delivered. There is no reason, so far as the de- partment is. concerned, why anpone shall, after Jsmunry 1, use 1917 mark- ers, and a circular to that effect has been issued to all police authorities. Beginning January 1, the depart- ment will issue, upon subscription, a daily printed list of registrations. This list, in the hands of police au- thurities, makes it unneceszary to communicate with the department for identification of violators. It meets the problem of having the informa- tion in the hands of enforcement offi- cers available for use first-hand. The list is also in demand by insurance agents and dealers. On July, 1918, a book of daily reg- istrations, which will also include sta- tistics, rulings of the department, suggestions regarding Connecticut road routes and tours, in all a book of about 500 pages, will be published. The book will bé sbld at bne aonar( per copy and in order to determine the necessary number to be P the department will, beginning uary 1, take subscriptions, therefor.
