Three valuable draft horses in an ad- | Joining stable were suffocated and three others were rescued but two suffered so severely from the effects of the smoke that they may die. The | origin of the fire is a mystery and will { be’the subject of an investigation by the fire marshal today. The warehouse was in charge of two men, one of whom was Gus Pfeiffer. The other was only known by his first name. Bcho From Halifax. West Haven—Some slight idea of the Halifax disaster is given in a short letter which a woman in ¥alifax has written to'a woman friend in this city. She points out that though only 35 wounded soldiers have returned from France, 400 persons have been blinded in the terrible holocaust. She commends the relief work given by the United States. She says: “You will see that we are in Hal- ifax and have been through the aw- ful disaster which ‘is nothing more than the work of the Germans. The city is sad to see, two square miles ab- solutely gone, and not a house in the | city undamaged. My mother’s home | is two miles from the explosion, and | our windows were al broken and doors i blown off, and the walls twisted and | plaster down. The loss of life is ter- ! rible, but the saddest of all are the i blind. About 400 have lost their slght from the effects of flying glass. “I have been working on relief night and day. The good United ! States did such wonderful work and i gave such prompt relief.” { Cheney Furnishes Silk. { Manchester—Because of the trou- ble in shipping their finished goods ‘!rom their mills here to their New !
