BRITAIN DAILY HERALB WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 26, 1017, THE FOURTH IMPORTANT LINK IR the CONNORS CHAIN o MEN’S STORES You All Know Me, So I'll Go Right On With My Introduction A BUSINESS ROMANCE or the Story of a Struggle This is a romance—a business romance. . Most romances have one hero and one heroine but this one has only one hero and no heroine. Furthermore, this hero is not a book hero. He does not resemble a Cluett, Peabody fashion, nor has he, as far as I know, ever posed as a model before Charles Dana Gibson. He is just a young man—plain ,sincere, hard work- ing young man—-the kind that make the world go ‘He is not a great man for he has not led colonists into a new world, nor freed a down-trodden race, nor invent- ed a device that marks an epoch. . But he is a soldier of the common good. He belongs to that ever increasing army of men who are transform- * ing business meorals—men who realize that the Golden . Rale is not only right, but beautiful; who recognize that the Square Deal is not only expedlent but necessary. This young man has made his work his hobby, and he . is riding his hobby on the Highway of Achlevement, the roldthatleadstothetownof “Make Good.” RALPH WALDO EMERSON made a very bold but true statement when he said that the greatest men have the shortest biographies. J. W. CONNORS will require no official blog'rapher His epitaphs will be graven in these few words: He lived his life on the ‘Golden Rule’ basis.” But J. W. Connors has received the blessing that only comes to men who have done their work well. And what greater joy can man experience on this earth than to hear his “otherself” say encouragingly: “That’s fine, old man keep it up, you're deing nobly?” J. W. Connors had an uphill struggle, but he got to the top, like a Locomobile takes a steep hill on high speed —only the Locomobile never struggles. These stories of success all read easy—they roll off the tongue. Take a little honesty, some brains, right proportion of hard-work, shake well before using and lo, you have success. That seems to be the formula. But there is no formula—there is no receipt. CLOSED Thursday and Friday. Open Saturday at 8:30 A. M. “CHARLIE” SCHWAB couldn’t have told us how he “did it” to save his life. . Success, like art, seems to ooze from a man’s finger ps. . You say it’s God-given energy? Perhaps it is—let it go at that. Eleven years ago I remember how this boy started. $000000000800000088840 203520000004000008000° Norwich was his first battieground. He soon realized lli_s limitations there. Then for seven years he was connected with Hollan- der’s of Hartford. He received a good schooling there. 'flien, he again became restless, and like Alexander, sighed for new worlds to conquer. Bridgeport loomed large on his horizon of possnblh- ties. Thinking is acting with “Jim,” so he soon had a store of his own, at 1154 Main street, Bridgeport. That was August, 1915. It wasn’t long before he saw the need of supplying the needs of the community in another section of Bridge- port. When the “gong” sounded for the second round, he came out of his corner with a rush and in September, 1916, opened his second store at 1370 State street. His success was phenomenal. It took no microscope to see it. He didn’t “back away.” He didn’t “stall”— didn’t “clinch”—didn’t have to apologize for his business methods. Here was a business that caught the breeze of public favor from the very jump. Here was a success made by one unknown that knocked out all competition with a single punch. Business continued to grow—then some more, and still more. One day a man said to him: “Connors, why don’t you open a store in our section?” And he did. His third store was opened at 687 E. Main street, Bridgeport, in February, 1917. Now let it be said that even Mr. Connors began to rub his eyes. Could it be? Was it a dream? “Pinch me, ‘Bill,’ said ‘Jim’ to his brother one morn- ing. “No need of it ‘Jim,’” replied “Bil” “you’re awake.” And he was right—he was awake—wide awake, for that rare, old bird, Success, had flown through th window and lighted in his office. 490008840 0000000000000 8800080880 208000800000 Poets, Dramatists and Biographers enjoy a certain privilege denied other men. They can span a period of one, five Lten or fifty years and need not apply to the Sec- retary of State for a special license. How The Connors Clothing Co. in two and one-half years have developed the most remarkable suecess in the history of retailing, would, in itself, be an interesting theme. REORGANIZATION SALE Absolute Clearance Saturday, December 29th Profits Eliminated Yet all this has been achieved, and if someone as me the “why,” I could only point to the live, intens Golden Rule business methods they employ. Furthermore, I believe that if they could sell b merchandise for the money, they’d do it, for Mr. Conn is working to see how much goodness he could put into his merchandise, not how much profit he can take out of it. Business to him is what baseball is to Eddie Col]ins, E or what a piano is to Josef Hoffman. It’s their very life—they give it every drop of their blood and when men go at work with a clenched fist, with zeal, with love, with patience, Pay is transformed into Play ,and lo, we have success. L L L e L T T Mr. Connors’ policies are an ideal made into the real. Mr. Connors started his business career in Norwich eleven years ago, he pledged his word to himself that some day he’d work his enthusiasm and ideals into a busi- ness of his own. This little story shows the promise fulfilled. So, New Britain will now have a store conducted on the same basis, where men, yunger men and youngsters will be able to get standard merchandise at moderate prices. Yet, like most new ventures, the public take nothi for granted—they all come from that grand, old state of Missouri—they want to be shown—and that’s exactly what we intend doing. You will get the benefit of our cash buyini methods. You don’t pay for the heavy losses on charge accounts, for we sell for cash only. You will not have to trade in Hartford ,now, and pay for those tremendous rents and big profits. You can now enjoy the advantages of shopping in New Britain, with the satisfaction of knowing that you will get the latest styles that the market affords. 0000000400900 000080080 4000000 atss0RevRRTES “ This little human story is incomplete bescause it only tells the result of two and a half years’ work—and play. Some day a sequel will be wriiten. I don’t know who’ll write it, but I predict now that the events of the second period will surpass those of the first. That bird, “Success” which flew through the window not so long ago is lodged permanently in “Jim’s” office, and he will continue to grow and grow and grow. “Do your duty and a little more,” quoth this bird, “forevermore.” JOS.
