Workers to Meet at Elks’ Club Members of teams and workers in the campaign for $65,000 to be con- ducted this week in this city under the duspices of the Y. M. C. A. and Knights of Columbus, will assemble at o'clock this evening at the New Britain lodse, B. P. O. E. home on | Washington street, where a luncheon will be served, followed by an array of brilliant speakers who will assist in setting off the first fireworks of the campaign. The campaign is being conducted by the organizations in the furtherance of the comfort and recreation of the American soldiers engaged in the war, Both the Y. M. C. A. and the Knights Columbus are branches of the nation- ‘al movement. New Britain residents in the past have shown the right spirit in assist- ing in campaigns, the Boys' Club, Y. W. C. A, Red Cross and Liberty Loans proving /that local people are consclous of the need of all possible assistance in war movements, Daly council, K. of C., had planned to raise $10.000 as its apportionate share of the $3,000.000 fund of the national council. The object of th: Y. M. C. A. is to raise $50,000. The entire fund will be divided on a ratic of six to one with the association on the long end. The speakers at tonight's opening will be George B. Chandler of Rocky Hill, compensation commissioner, and one of the most eloquent orators in Connecticut. Mr. Chandler wiil tell of the aims and objects of the cam- paign. Rev. John T. Winters, pastor of St. Mary’s church and John F. Gunshannon of Hartford, formerly tuberculosis commissioner in this state, will complete the speakers' list. Director Herbert H. Pease will out- line the plan of the campaign for the week. Luncheons followed by reports by the team captains will be held at the Elks home on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday noons.
