~ AMERICA NO PLACE * * FOR HALF-GITIZENS Pastor Harriman Says Friends of Kaiser Should Get Out Patriotism and religion shared equally important roles in the con- + cluding sermon of the series on "Evo- lution™ delivered last night at the People’s church by Rev. N. H. Harri- man. The speaker was severe to an intense degree with the traitors to the nation and the traitors to God. Among his statements, Pastor Har- riman took issue with the slogan “to make the world sate for democracy.” He spoke from a theological stand- point when he said “Men and women, listen to me. Let me prophesy. When the world is safe for democracy there will be no democracy. He Whose right it is to reign will have returned from heaven.” Turning to the “enemies within our “* gates,” Pastor Harriman sald: * cxtreme measures should be adoptec to rid this country of all traitors and half-heartcd citizens in this struggle between the savagery of the ‘survival of the fittest’ and Christian morality embodied in national life. That man ar woman who lives sa close to ‘ko ., Knisor that when the Kaiser i hitPho rels hurt has no place in the United Statcs today. I am in entire sympa- thy with Col. Rooscvelt in his convic- tion that no man is a true American today who has a ‘Ofty-fifty loyalty.’ It is the congensus of those who have heard 'Pastor Harriman’'s series ‘ on “Evolution” that his concluding sermon was the strongest of the six. In it he flayed without mercy those who question the Bible and attempt to explain the existence of a universe by natural, rather than supernatural means. He also warns the degener- ate to mend their ways for their hour is approaching. The sermon, in part, follows: “‘In ten years' time or sooner, there will be no church’, a prominent business man is reported to have said recently. And of four prominent ministers discussing this statement, three agreed with him. This, or sub- stantially this, is In the air today. What is the matter? ‘“The only answer is the one I have ‘been giving in this series of sermons. The Bible statements of the origin of things, the fall of man, the divine way of deliverance by meeting de- pravity with new life from God, by meeting degeneration with regenera- tion—this is the only answer. “The anarchy that is rampant in national life, and in social life, the world over, s also rampant in the life “ of the churches. The only - strong chureh today is the Catholic church —strong I ‘mean in meeting this down-grade tendency to no govern- ment, which is anarchy, “Our President has given the world a slogan, and.the world is taking It up: ‘Make the world safe for democ- racy.’ But Germany comes back with a sneer at ‘the American heresay that democracy is the only stable govern- > ment’ The fact is, democracy has grave inherent weaknesses: every- body recognizes that. Yet it is the slo- gan today. In Russia they are hav- ing a hard time to establish democ- racy; anarchy, no government, dogs the hezls of democracy so closely. “Let me give you a slogan that will harmonize with Bible revelation: Not ‘A world safe for democracy’; but ‘A democracy fit for the world, restored to the deminion of Chriat!’ And hear me: When that time comes it will not 3 pe democracy, but a kingdom of last- Ing peace, because ruled over by “The Prince of Peace.’ “A word more: Unless annihilation of the wicked is God's order—and it is net, if I read the Scriptures aright —you and I will live, here or else- - where, to see the despised and hated Jew, degenerate from his former glory, restored and standing next in honor and service to Christ. But perhaps I have gone far enough in that direction: someone might, if I went the limit, charge me with being pro-German or crazy—and there isn’t much difference between the two. “The course of world-empire, as re- vealed to Daniel in Nebuchadnezzar's great image, will surely run out to the finish. “Babylon venished as prophesied. Maedo-Persia came and vanished as prophesied. Alexander came and Masedo-Persia went down as prophe- sied. Rome rose and Alexander’'s em- pire went down as prophesied. Rome 4 has given place to the mixed iron and clay of a conglomerate world rule, that this war will develop into the ten toes of the image of Ne- buchadnessar—unless all signs fail. “What next? You know what next. ‘And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, % which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and ronsume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. With four parts »f the prophecy already played through on the great stage of world empire, played through literally as revealed to Daniel, think you that the fAfth will fall? Why, men, the sav- A Ing of the world depends upon the vision being played through. “And it will be played through, as .sirely as God lives. ‘His legs of \ron, his feet part of iron and part of tlay. Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that wers iron and clay, snd brake them to pleces. . . . Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountsin witheut hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the prass, the clay, the sitver, and the Pld; the groat God hath made known ‘o the king what shall come to pass s A CONSTIPATION IS A PENALTY OF AGE Nothing is so essential to health in advancing age as free- dom and no activity of the bowels. It makes one feel younger and fresher, d fore- talls colds, piles, fevers, and other dopendent ills. Cathartics and purgatives are violent and drastic in action and should be avoided. A mild, ef- fective laxative, recommended by hysicians and who wve used it, is far preferable. This is the combination of simple laxative herbs with pepsin sold by lrw under the name of Dr. Ci ell’s Syrup Pepsin. It costs only fifty cents a bottle; a teial botile, free of charge, can be obtained by writing to Dr. W. B. Caldwell, 456 Will:in‘lon St., Monticello, Illinois. hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure. “Men and women, listen to me. Let me prophesy. When the world ia safe for democracy, there will be no democracy. ‘He whose right it is to reign will have returned from heaven. Despised and scattered and blinded Israel who gave up their Messiah to be crucified, will have been restored, redeemed; and the Son wha went away into a far country to receive a kingdom, will have received Hia kingdom, and returned. “Last Sunday night we saw evolu- tlon, working in the sphere of the world interests, heading off the Pro- testant reformation from its logical declopment, and attaching it to the world system as embodied in human government. We al saw its selfish and savage law of ‘the survival of the fittest’ taken up by a great nation as the highest law of nations, and the world by it plunged into war, such a war as makes men ask if civilization has indeed come to an end. “In this war we sse both sides fol- lowing what to them is the only practical course, but both falling short of God’s revealed way of peace: both seeking peace by conquest; neither seeking it by the divine route. On the one side, the survival of the strong ia the theory. On the other side, the survival of christian ethical standards among nations is the theory. Neither rises high enough to insure permanent peace upon the earth; that can never come until christian ethics spring out of christian hearts, ‘“Meanwhile, no, man need stand for a moment in doubt as ta which side of this struggle a christian should take. ‘So long as we live in the world, so long must we be on the side which seeks to make the world a better plagg to live in’—that was what I said last Sun- day evening. I wil go much further than this, I will express my bellef that extreme measures should be adopted to rid this cauntry of all trai- tors and half-hearted citizens, in this struggle between the savagery of ‘the surival of the fittest’ and christian morality embodied in national life. “That man or woman who lives close to the Kaiser that when the Kalser is hit he gets hurt, has no place in the United States today. I am in entire sympathy with Colonel Roosevelt in his conviction that no man is a true American today who has ‘a fifty fifty loyalty’; with him I consider a divided layalty at this crisis in world standards as no better than the loyalty of a husband who sayi ‘Yes, I love you, dear; but I love an- other woman about as well.’ “Neverthelss ,this war will not bring to the world lasting peace: that will come in only one way, and I have indicated that way. Those who are looking to this war to bring the mil- lennium, are destined to bitter dis- appointment. ‘When the S8on of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy angels with Him, then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory; and before Him shall be gathered all na- tlons’—for the judgment of natioms. The millennium will come in by that route, and In no other way. The Church and The Churches. *“ “The Church' of our evening's topic is not the same as ‘the church- es.’ In the churches, and I will not say wholly in the churches, is ‘The Church.’ The one is made up of all regenerate persons. The other is a mixed body, more nearly correspond- ing to ‘the kingdom of heaven' as used by Jesus—regenerate and un- regenerate, wheat and tares. “The Church’ is what God planned. ‘The churches' is what Satan has effected. And one of his most successful means for effecting it has been evolution. “Satan attacked the credibility of the Bible by teaching that creation was not creation, but evolution. And, ag we have seen, he got by with the fraud, and fooled the world with it for some decades. The Bible discred- ited at one point was discredited at every point. Therefore we see at once spring up all sorts of attacks upon the Bible in the name of ‘Bible criticism.” ‘Higher criticism’ and lower criticism and some of the low- est criticism ran rampant. And all the time The Church was the sufferer. All these attacks were evolution under the guise of Bible study and improve- ment upon the old-fashioned aceept- ance of the Bible as The Word of God. Evolution moved into the churches, and assailed The Church. ‘The one object of The Church is the spread of the knowledge of sal- vation. Moreover, that is her only mission: not ‘social service,’ although her members may well give what sympathy they can spare from the main issue, and all the time they can spase, to such social service as ap- peels to their judgment as desirable. The one thing to keep clearly in mind, however, is that these efforts are for making the world a better place to live in, and when pushed as the proper work of The Church are switching and side-tracking The Church’s true work, not only, but are in danger of lulling people to sleep with the idea that ‘good works’ are ‘salvation.’ “Not only in this work the only mis- =lon of The Church, but she is the only agent provided on the human 80 i RITAIN DAILY HER/ side to do this work. Nonme but the regenerate are looked to, to spread ! the knowledge that man may be regen- ' erated. Bither she must do it, or it will go undone. This is God's plan. Not through merely good people, in the sense of well-meaning and mor- ally upright people, did God plan to send the ‘Good News’ of salvation, but through those who personally know the pardoning and regenerating pow- er of such a falth. Not even by an- gels, therefore, did God plan to spread the gospel message, but just by hu- mans whose hearts burn with grat- itude and love, going forth under the inspiration of that love and empow- cred by the indwelling Holy Spirit. “Someone tells an imagined con- versation taking place in heaven be- tween the asgended Lord and some bright angel, on his arrival there from his mediatorial visit to earth. It ia gomething like this: ‘Son of God, how have you left earth and come back before the world knows what you have done for its salvation? ‘I have left my church tc go and tell them.” ‘But, Son of God, they are but a little handful of people, and common people at that, uneducated and mostly poor; how did you dare? If they fall, what other provision did you make? ‘I made no other provision,’ the Son of God is supposed to have replied, ‘no other provision.’ Do you get the connection? Evolution and Salvation. “Cripple The Church and man is robbed of his only chance of salva- tion, This is Satan's strategy. Hence his interest in going into the field of theology and Bible criticism. Hence the awful, unspeakable, sin when men accept financial support from churches founded to propagate the Bible story of salvation, and with that support and under the guise of true shepherds of Ged's presious flock pro- ceed to tear to pleces that Haly Bible, the only medium through which we knew anything about a supernatural way of salvation! It is awiul! The ‘light of the world,’ which Jesus said ‘His Church was, became savorless, fit only to ‘be cast out and trodden under foot of man;’ while that which should have been preserved, rots and i cast away! Oh, what a call for separa- tion! Oh, what a responsibility upon true bellevers! And this going on everywhere! And Jesus at the door! Jesus, open blind eyes, in pity open blind eves, Jesus, everywhere, before you return. Evolution and Criticism. ‘“Not content with attacking the Bible in the story of creation, evolu- tion proceeded to attack every part of it, substituting the theory of develop- ment everywhere for God's super- natural and instantaneous - working. ‘“Mases’ authorship of the first five books was disputed on all sorts of grounds. A collection of myths and allegories and folk lore is perhaps the favorite way of accounting for these books and other books; but in all of their theories to throw discredit upon the Bible appears the trail of the ser- pent:truth grew up naturally, instead of being written by the hand of God through ‘holy men of God' who ‘spake as they were moved by the holy Ghost.’ “Since everything came through development, much of the matter at- tributed to Moses they said was im- possiBle for various reasons. For instance, there was no settled lan- guage or literature at the time. They said that appeared only afterward by the law of development. Many of the things stated as historic could not have occurred, they clamored, for things had not developed to the stage which made them possible at those times. And while they reasoned from their evolution premises, and dreamed their dreams, and flattered themselves upon their wonderful dis- coverles that proved the Bible un- true, lo, the pick and shovel of un- covering buried civilizations with rec- ords written in their clay cylinders of the very events recounted in the Bible—whole llibraries of these clay clylnders. Thus does God mock at the wisdom of unbelleving man, and vindicate the Old Book, His very voice speaking from the dumb earth. The werk of archeology is God's hand- writing upon the wall of the banquet hall of evolution's sacrilegious carni- val. Degeneration and Crisis. “Evolution would have the world believe that in man’s history and in the history of nature, everything goes forward by development, evolution. But in man’s history as in nature’s history, as we saw last Sunday night, the ‘progress is always backward'— degeneration written on everything. “And this is just as true in the matter of religion as elsewhere. " In this is revealed a most wonderful and instructive law, though so far it as I know has never received a name. Ac- cording to its working, man religious- ly and morally has been kept going by periodic crises in = his history. These crises have been God’s super- natural interferences, picking man up again and again, at the foot of his toboggan slide, lifting him back to a working level by supernatural intervention, and starting him on again. And, with every new start, he was soon on the toboggan slide again. “Adam’s fall ran the whole length of the toboggan in one generation: his firstborn becoming a fratricide. By supernatural intervention, a holy seed was given, and in Seth the race start- ed again with God. In a very short time, the fatal law of degeneration had wrought till only eight people ‘were fit to live; and God drowned the earth with the flood. “Started again in Noah, offering his sacrifice on coming from the ark, and under covenant with God, as soon-as the earth was again peopled the pride of their ‘hearts was such that God scattered them abroad to found the nations of the earth. And their confusion of language and national separation has continued to this day. “Next, out of the ruck God calls a heathen Chaldean, Abram, and makes him Abraham; and from him mixed up the race of Israel, to be His special people, and keep alive the knowledge of God in the earth. But degeneration worked on; and the third generation from Abraham was a race of slaves of Egypt, and God picked them up, by the hand of HE CURED . Russell, and at the best drug store in every town and city in the country. Moses and by signs and wonders led them out and planted them in a good land. “In a few generations they were 80 degenerate that God drove them out, and agein they were a race of slaves in the far East, near where Abraham came from. Never recover-, ing from this, with ten of the twelve tribes so completely lost that they have not been found to this day. Af- ter four centuries of silence in the sacred record, to the degenerate frag- ment dwelling in Jerusalem under the yoke of the world-rulers the Ro- mans, suddenly God's crowning in- tervention came—the Savior was born, bringing salvation to the race and to the world. “But even here the fatal law of de- generation still showed itself: ‘He came unto his own, and they that were his own received him not.’ They rejected their Savior, cried ‘His blood be upon us and upon our chil- dren!’ and to this day poor scattered Judah has been the football of the whole world, hated, smitten, spit upon. Israel's history in the land stopped; two thousand years of sus- pended Jewish history has followed, while God has been calling out His church. “His next move has been abun- dantly disclosed in prophecy: when the cup of the world’s iniquity is full; when the work of Satan in the realm of Christianity has headed up in ‘the great apostasy;’ then God is going again to pick up the world—but this time in- judgment. “‘As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be glso in the days of the Son of Man.' Jesus Christ, the as- cended Son of Man is to sweep back to this earth, first to take up his Bride; then with his Bride to judge sin relentlessly, and make an end of sin forever. “Then will the weary earth, red with the blood of her children, for the first time since the fall of Adam know a happy climax of world peace, under the millennial reign of ‘The Prince of Peace.” What a prospect! “How different, too, this history of degeneration and crisis, from the poor theory of evolution! Yet noth- ing convinces those bitten with fits deadly fangs. Blindness comes over their hearts, and they go on battling against the bible in a frenzy, their eyes holden, their minds inflamed with seeming hatred against all that is supernatural in it. Even this unparal- lelled world war does not seem to have any message for them! “The mouth of unbelieving scholar- ship is full of the cr. ‘See how the world is growing bette The father- hood of God and the brotherhood of man is speeding the day of universal peace and concord! No more wars! Bind the nations together in arbitra- tion treaties; hald peace congresses everywhere; build a peace palace at the Hague; all nations are ready to join bands, as they hae already joined hearts, in millennial glory!" That was the cry, sounding louder and louder, When the fatal day of the beginning of the fatal war woke the world from its fatal slumber! Their evolutionary civilization fell about thelr ears with the crash of doom! “With this lesson before us; with degeneration met by supernatural crisis throughout the whole history ta the present; and with clear notice; spread alarmingly over the pages of the New Testament telling us that this age too is going to end in a great apostasy of the churches: shall we be foolish enough to think that God is going back on His sacred Word and reverse His procedure of the cen. turles that vain man may in his folly create, develop, evolve & milennium of his own! Oh, the blind folly of it all!l Even now they are saying that there will never be an- other war after this one. While God has said that the worst one of all s yet to come! The Great Apostasy. “Now for my text: ‘Now the Spirit expressly declares that in later times some will fall away from the faith, glving heed to deceiving spirits and the teachings of demons; through the hypocrisy of men who teach falsely and have their own consciences meared as with a hot iron'—1 Tim. 4:1, 2. Weymouth’s translation. “Paul the great apostle is the au- thor of the text. If ‘inspiration’ ac- counts for the Bible, then it is God the Holy Ghost speaking. And Paul says that the Spirit ‘expressly de- clares’ that ‘in later times,’ the end of the present age, there are to be ‘teachings of demons’ introduced into the churches ‘through the hypocrisy of men who teach falsely’, because ‘their own consciences’ are ‘seared as with a hot iron’; and that ‘some will,’ through this, ‘fall away from the faith.’ That falling away is ‘apost. asis’ or “apostasy.’ “Here you have a dark crisis pre- dicted at the end of the church age, very different from the evolution teaching of o gradual climbing up to LD, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1917 'Phone orders, Charter 3050, and Mail Orders promptly filled. And the source of the apost- asy is specifically pointed out: Satan’s demons. And it is to be an apost- asy ‘from the faith’—from the doc- trines of salvation. And the agents of Satan in this bad work are men whom he has tricked, and who be- come the victims of a sad process of blinding and depravity of their con- sciences, so that they become hypo- crites. “And some of these men are very dear men, naturally, and it is hard to believe that they are hypocrites. You could not believe it, were it not that you are told that they have been transformed by Satan. Oh for God to open their eves, and deliver them from the snare! Such despicable things they do! Such sly things they do! “But it is the great truth of the second coming of Christ where Satan has done his shrewdest work upon the doctrines. As we have seen, the last great crisis of the age is to be the sudden appearing of Christ in the heavens, catching up His Bride and then coming in judgment to deliver the world from the age-long domin- fon of sin and Satan. The kingdom is to be set up when the King comes to relgn.
