DABO Untold Misery Snliered by Young Women in Belgium and France New York, Nov. 3.—Denunciation of the agitation for premature peace, a first-hand account of German atroci- ties which stirred the audience, and recommendation by a former premier jof Australia of an Anglo-American alliance as the best guarantee against j another world cataclysm were prom- inent in the speeches made at the luncheon of the Members’ Council of the Merchants’ association. While the audience responded with n.pplu.usAe to the discussion of politi- cal features of the war by Sir George Reid, founder and first premier of the Australian Federation and later Australian high commissioner in Lon- don, and by George W. Wickersham, former attorney general of the United States, their feelings seemed to be more deeply stirred by Dr. Leon Dabo, the artist, who was the last speaker. Dr. Dabo was introduced by Wil- liam C. Breed, president of the Mem- bers’ Council, as a member of an American commission ‘sent by our government to investigate atrocities in France. Dr. Dabo began with the sweeping statement: “All that you have heard, all that you have read, all that you have imagined about this war is not wrong. All that the cor- respondents send over about the atrocities that have been committed, all the inhumanities, all the bestiali- ties that no paper can possibly re- ceive in ink—they are not only true, but the worst of them cannot be told. ‘“To return from France and to come in contact with America’s men and women, to see the civilians op the streets with clean linen on, to see women fashionably dressed, to ey There is more Catarrh in this seetion of the country than all other diseases put to(ether and for years it was sup- posed be incurable. It is your task to see that the inconclusive peace talk shall be throttled.” At the end Dr. Dabo said that he was going to venture to break the unwritten rule of the association and touch upon city politics, but upon j Chairman Breed’s suggesting that this would be ‘inadvisable he contented himself by saying that thefe was no greater duty for the American at present than to be very careful 'who is selected: to represent the citizens in public office. Sir George Reld praised the heroism of Australian soldiers in the war, and said that although the British em- pire was won by conquest, there was a new soul in British statesmanship and that the Colonials now rejoiced in the terms, ‘empire” and “im- perial.” Then, recounting _incldents of Anglo-American friendship, he sald that he knew on private and indis- putable authority that during the Spanish-American war Lord Salisbury “was approached with regard to a project of sending a naval demon- stration from Europe. Lord Salis- bury would have none of {it” con- tinued Sir George. “He was asked, ‘Suppose Europe sends one, about it?° He replied: ‘I will tell you what about it. If you begin that sort of game, you will find the British fleet there facing you.’ “For three years,” continued Sir George, “‘our blotkade In this war was terribly hampered by you.
