The Armenians of the district of Alash- gert in Turkey were by it compelled to flee to the Caucasus. It also caused the evacuation of the city of Van by the Russians. This city had been de- fended in April and May by the A.r-l menlan population against a strong 'furkish army. Russian aid had ar- rived just in time to save it and the Turks ran away, but when the Rus- sians heard of the Turkish advance toward Alashgert, fearing their line of retreat might be cut off, they evacuat- ~ STREET. Eben Reeks, resigned, as superintendent of health, This action was tdken at a special meeting of the board yesterday after- noon at which both Dr.. During the summer of 1916 the work of repatriation ivas undertaken and hundreds of farmers were returned to their homes in the province of Van and supplied with oxen, plows, seed and so forth.
