Harriman Delivers Fourth Attack on Scientists Rev. N. H. Harriman, pastor of the People’s church, delivered his fourth attack on evolution last night at the church, comparing man’s lot and fate as argued by evolutionists and as it is revealed in the Bible. An abstract of the sermon follows: Evolution and Redemption. “Quoting from an able lawyer, whom God saved from darkness and despair—and evolution—let me sum up the facts already proven. All talk ‘differentiation’, and ‘integration’, ous to the heterogeneous’ of ‘primorr- dial protoplasm’ and ‘primal nebul- osity’ and all the rest, has no more solid foundation than ‘Gulliver’s Trav- els. “If I have not shown that this is true, I am sure I do not know how one could show anything to be true. From its own advocates, it is con- fessed that evolution is at best un- proven. From former evolutionists, we have heard most positive assaults upon its claims. While from the wis- est and sanest of modern scientists, real sclentists and not cheap philos- ophers and guessers, we learn that the sclentific world today discards it al- most altogether. “And now we come to the most con- vincing proof as to the original of this exploded and unchristian theory of evolution when we take up the topic of the evening, ‘Evolution and Re- demption. Here, the violence, and virulence of its attacks upon the Bible plan of salvation, plainly re- veal the Dragon, that old serpent, which is called the Devil, and Satan. In Eden he won the race of man in our first parents. In Eden was pre- dicted a ‘Seed of the woman’ who was to defeat and destroy his power. On ! Calvary that ‘Seed’ of the woman bruised his head. A little hence and that ‘Seed’ is to cast Satan into the ‘l]ake of fire'. Naturally, therefore, Satan does not love the Son of God, nor ‘the great salvation.” “Several times I have noted this trend of the evolution attack upon the Bible. In studying its attack upon the Genesis account, I have asked you to notice, more than once, that every- thing in evolution seems driving eag- erly on till it reaches man. Once I asserted that this eagerness to climb up to man, and prove him the prod- uct of natural causes and not of su- pernatural creation, had its signifi- cance in the aim of Satan to discred- it man’s redemption. Tonight we shall see that this is the real inward- ness of evolution, for it not only does not stop short of the sphere of re- liglon, but it boldly plunges into that sphere, and seeks to discredit not only the need but the fact of redemption of man. And this is precisely what we should expect. A Bible Text. “You observe that I am no longer admitting, even for argument's sake, that this Bible may not be the very word of God. The Book that has for three generations withstood the as- saults of the world gone mad over evolution, natural origins instead of supernatural; the Book that has come out of the awful confiict as the chil- dren of Israel came out of the Red Sea dry shod and saw their énemles dead upon the shore—that Book, whose theory of the origin of things stands out before the scientific world as the only really scientific explana- tlon of things—that Book is indeed ‘The Word of God. “From that Book I give you a text, and you will observe how well it fits the situation we are discussing to- night: ‘But if our Gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: in whom the god of this world hath blinded the mindg of them which belleve not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.—2 Cor. 4:3,4. Here is the picture of men in unbelief, with minds blinded be- cause of their unbelief, blinded by Satan, ‘the god of this world,’ and blinded that they may miss the light and benefits of the ‘glorious Gospel of Christ” If our ministerial Brethren who are still preaching evolution had not rejected the Bible really, if<they really believed that there is a hell for incorrigible sinners, would not that text startle them? The fact is, evo- lutionists are inevitably universalists, in the final analysis of their unbelief. “The fact is, that this arrogant the- ory of natura] origins, which assails the Bible teaching of supernatural creation, has by this attitude discred- ited all Bible teaching, Not content with discrediting it in general, it has entered the field of theology and attacked all that is fundamental and vital. It has invaded the holy of holies of the Christian church; taint- ed the teachings of its pulpits; put unbelief of the Bible into its chairs of instruction in its seminaries where are trained its ministers, thus poison- Ing at its source the stream of sacred learning. It has sought to pre-empt and control its religious press; and contaminate its Sunday school liter- ature. It has Invaded the Christian home; manipulated the making of the public school books; hypnotized many of the teachers of the young in school and college; and demoralized the thinking of the world. This is evolu- tion In the realm of religion. Have we not the right, then, to assert that evolution’s highest aim, in the malig- nant mind that originated it, was to keep man from the benefits of God's great good news of redemption from sin through precious blood? That we do assert. And proceed to prove it. The Fall of Man, “At this stage of our enquiry, it should not be necessary to say that all modern thought which assails ‘su- perraturalism,” is evolution. 1In the realm of religion, evolution appears under many disgulses; but its maln e JH A = e 2 - S ow | Made Caruso Climb a Ladder ‘It can’t be done, and sing, too,” said the tenor. “You must,”” was the answer. ‘“ Let me see you do it,” said Caruso. R R S A T I characteristic is always the same—an attempt to eliminate the supernatural from men’s thinking. This is the i sue at every point. So long as the Bible stands as authority, calli upon men to recognize creation and redemption as God’s work, an in- stantaneous, supernatural work in each case, so long Satan is entirely thwarted in his attempts to foist evo- lution upon the world. So, into the world of human thinking he injects this theory of evolution in the pro- cesses of nature, and evolution in the processes of grace. And the method of his work is very shrewd in each case. “For instance: Evolution says that man ‘fell upward.' The Bible says he fell downward. Evolution says man is—yes—something is the mat- ter with him of course; but he is ‘unfortunate.’ God says he is ‘guilty.’ Evolution says man’s misfortune is due to his limitations—his ‘environ- ment,’ his ‘education.” The Bible says that man’s trouble is due to ’Sin.’ Evolution denies that there can be divine retribution upon sin that can be eternal: God is too good to visit such; man i{s too good to deserve it. The Bible says that man’s sin s against eternal and perfect holiness, the human will in rebellion against the will of God, and if not removed and corrected by one only. method, that of the Cross, man’s guilt be- comes eternal and merits an eternal | | punishment, and will receive an eter nal punishment: is a guilt so heinous that unless put away it will land the <oul in the ‘lake of fire,” ‘the place prepared for the devil and his angels.’ Total Depravity. ‘““Evolution admits, as we have seen, that something has befallen man, and left a mark upon him—a kind of pravity that has left him with an un- fortunate and unhealthy bias to things | at least inconvenient; but still noth- ing that could incur guilt or that can- not be removed by proper environ- ment and education. The Bible claims that what has befallen man is sin; and that this sin has wrecked man in every department of his complex being—spirit, soul, body. ““This is the Bible teaching that has given rise to the term ‘total deprav- ity Not total in the sense that man is as bad as he can be; on the con- trary, he grows worse and worse under its action; but total in the sense that nothing in man has es- caped the blighting touch of sin— apirituality blighted if not destroyed; mentality weakened, till it is impos- sible to imagine what the unfallen man probably was in mental power. Body weakened, depraved from its pristine glory, till nobody can imagine what a beautiful being he was phy- cally when he came forth from the creative hand of God. This is total depravity. It i a mark, like the { resurrection mark of Cain, an indelible staln, reaching through the warp and woof of his being—indelible ve as it is removed by the precious blood of Calvary. And among the glories of that redeemed and glorified state that is the heritage of the redeemed, im- agination fails to picture the glorious body of the glorified saint. No wonder that evolution as- sails the Rible teaching of depravity “Hducation cannot remove this de- pravity. Cain, outcast from Eden and marked forever for his crime, went forth to become the builder of cities, and the head of the world s: tem that today stands over agains God's supernatural system of redemp- tion. All this wonderful, amazing ‘progress’ in the arts and sciences that to the unredeemed is proof that the golden age is to come thraugh ‘de- velopment'—all this started with Cain. It is evolution applied to the natural man. It is the crowning work of edu- cation, gradual evolution of man's natural greatness. Evolution ad- vances this as the answer to the teaching of the Blble as to ‘deprav- ity It can fill the world with man's wonderful inventions; but cannot cleanse his heart from the stain of sin. It can cause man to fall down and worship the work of his own hands; but when he rises from his knees he still has in his heart that which leads him to turn the full results of his marvelous inventions upon the slaugh- : HARTFORD GREATEST BARGAINS OF THE SEASON IN TRIMMINGS Markdown of all Odds and Ends. The present world war, with its unspeakable weapons of destruction of human life, is the answer to his own plea that education and natural human great- ness is good enough, and proves that man is not under the curse of deprav- ity due to sin. A Real Evolution, *“And this fact of ‘depravity’ brings us to another fact which was referred to in the last sermon: there is a real evolution; and it is due to the fall and depravity of man; and is found in the realm of man’'s activities; and. it is the history of man's slow and halting struggles to reach his ldeals. “You will get my point, if you will compare man’s mental and processes with the ‘instincts’ of the lower ani- mals, who did not have part in man’'s fall in sin. This is not to argue that ‘instinet’ is superlor to ‘reason’; only that it is superior In one important re- spect: instinct works infallibility; rea- son works haltingly, by experiment and failure, and trylng again—evolu- tion in fact. “Instinct hits the bullseye every time. Intellect hits it seldom, and generally if not always by experiment. Instinct does it perfectly and never changes. Intellect does it imperfect- ly, and is always changing improving, developing the higher from the lower. This is r¢al evolution. And in the realm of man’s activities progress is by evolution, and in no other way— because of human depravity in the sphere of his intellect. In the realm of unfallen animals, this uncertainty | and halting never appears. i Bridgeton,N.J.— “Compare the bird’s nest with St.| highly of Lydia E. Pinkham's ¥ Paul's in London.
