WITH TORPEDOES 260 Lost on French Ship, 56 on British Auxiliary Vessel Oct. 16.—Two hundred and fifty lives were lost when the steamer Merdie was torpedoed on Sept. 23 in the Mediterranean, a Reuter’s dispatch from Paris. The explosion of the torpedo deto- nated the munitions in the ship’s car- go. There were more than 500 pas- sengers on hoard the steamer, includ- ing soldiers and prisoners of war. The British armed mercantile cruis- er Champagne has been sunk, and the mine-sweeping sloop Begonia is over- due and regarded as lost, says an offi- cial statement issued last night, which | reads: ““His Majesty’s mine-sweeping sloop ! Begonia, Lieut. Commander Basil 8. ! Noake, R. N., is now considerably | overdue nad must be considered lost [ with all hands. | " “His Mafesty’s armed mencantile ! eruiser Champagne, Acting Captain Percy G. Brown, R. N, in command, has been torpedoed and sunk. Five officers and fifty-one ment were lost.” London, says There i3 no record of a British steamship Champagne in the shipping register. The Medie was a French vessel of 4,470 tons. She was built in 1912, and her home port was Marseilles. The only gamble in a Liberty Bond" subscription is the gamble on how long Germany can last now America is in it.
