NEW. BRITAIN- PAILY HERALD, -WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1, NDERBILTS SERVE NATION ON LAND, ON SEA AND AIDING SOLDIERS' FAMILIES In devoting their time, energy and Ith to the government in wartime the members of the Vanderbilt fam- ily are doing, of course, many other American families con- sider their duty and their privilege, but their wealth and social promi- nence give distinction to their fce. In showing thus their devotion to the American caused the present duy Vanderbilts are following the ex- ample of the late Cornelius Vander- |Bilt, known as Commodore Vander- only serv- what | bilt, who died in 1877. During the civil war he was a most zealous up- holder of the Union cause and pre- sented the steamship Vanderbilt to the government. .For this act he re- ceived a gold medal from congress. He was the great grandfather of Colonel Cornelius Vanderbilt (No. 4 Jn the accompanying pictures,) who | is colonel of the Twenty-second regi- { ment, New York national guard, and also one of the inspector generals of | the New York national guard. Colonel Vanderbilt has been .very active fot | many years in New York national guard affairs and Mrs. Vanderbilt (at center in No. 2 of accompanying pic- tures) devotes much time to the relief of the families of guardsmen, as is] shown in the picture. Their son Cor- nelius, who recently enlfsted in th¢ New York national Guard, is No.'1 in the pictures. No. 3 is young Wil- liam Henry Vanderbilt, son of the late Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, brother of Colonel Vanderbilt. He and Harold S. Vanderbilt (No. 5 in pic: tures,) son of William K. Vanderbilt, are now members of the United Statei naval forces. I I‘TWO EXPERT SWIMMERS SHOW US HOW TO SAVE DROWNING PERSONS = This photograph shows Miss Mae JO'Loughiin, trick and fancy diver, mnd Harry Elionsky, sometimes known “Buster,” national wion at freak swimming, demon- strating the proper v to carry a swimming person through the water. Ot is very difficult te photograph a position of this sort in the water, so as cham- Miss O’Loughlin and Mr. Elionsky posed for the picture on a pier. All swimming instructors and schools lay stress in their courses on the matter of the proper handling of drowning persons, since very often not only the saving of the life of the victim, but also that of the rescuer, depends upon the employment of proper measures.
