Will Not Fill Ranks ashington, July for physical 30.—The eraminations first for every board in the coun- to reports received The provost marshall general’s predicts that in most of the m it will be necessary to summon in addition as many men as were in- cluded in the first call to -fill up the ' quotas required from cach com- munity. The regulations sent out from here provided that each local board should call for examination 200 per cent. of its quota. This, it was ex- plained, was merely as an experi- ment and did not indicate the number of men that ought to suffice for se- curing the quota required. About four times the number of men required to fiill the quotas will be called by boards in some commu- nities. THis prediction was made on only imperfect returns. The physi- cal examinations of the men begin in most parts of the country early thsi week. By the end of the week most of the boards will have a file of exemption notices showing ho wmany men think they should be excused from service. By that time the boards will know more definitely the approximate number of men it will be necessary to summon. Many Hasten to Altar. The large number of marriages that have taken place in the last few days, following an announcement from officials here that the law pro- vided in general for the exemption of all, mgrpled men regardless of when they ‘were married, is calculated to havp aome effect on the number of men it will be necessary to call. The percentage of eligibles have married in the last few days has not been great in comparison with the 9,600,000 men registered, but the fact that those who did were principally men whose numbers were at the head of the list may cause the local boirds to extend their calls much further down the list of eligi- bles than had been expected. Officials here have noticed the big rush to marry within the last few days by those who apparently intend- ed to escaps the draft, hut so far have expressed no belief that the law.can be directly interpreted in any way that will take petticoat protec- tiop frormn the man married since the | lottery and more than it can be in- who 1 ai terpreted so as to take the breadwin- ners from other families.| The ques- tion of which married men must serve and which are to be exempted will be up to the local boards. The personal privileges of an eligi- ble man or his selfish interests in the matter are not to be considered at all, and unless he can prove that his wife depends directly on his labor for support, whether he was mar- ried yesterday or five years ago, will be taken for service if found to be otherwise fit. BAN ON TROOP NEWS Stricter Censorship to be Enforced At ‘Washington Concerning Activitied of American Soldiers Going Across. ‘Washington, July 30.—The moving of American troops to France will be carried on without publicity the War Department plans. Secretary Baker and some (but not of his military advisors believe that no word should be published of the arrival of troops abroad, and it is probable that this will be made clear to all newspapers and press as. sociations in coming regulations un- der the voluntary censorship to which the press has subjected itself. It is understood however, that Mr. Baker believes that with large troop move- ments in prospect it would be un- wise to call the attention of the Ger- —— e $500 CASH Gives you title to modern 11 room, 2 family house with corner 10t and space for another house. Insurance man authorities to what is going on. Assurances have been given by both navy and army officials that disasters will not be concealed and presumably the American people will be expected to understand that no news is good news. Secretary of the Navy Daniels, al- though he may not share Secretary Baker’s views, will not permit the announcement from his department of any information Mr. Baker de- sires withheld. The objection to publishing troop arrivals is not expected to extend to properly consored reports of the ac- tivities of the American troops in France. A system of regular official announcements by the War Depart- ment on the military situation is under consideration. COST OF WHISKEY INCREASED. Thirsty New Haven Citizens Must Dig Deeper. New Haven, July 30—Whiskey sold over the bar in flasks and by the bottle has been increased in price, according to statenients made by New Haven liquor dealers at a meet- ing yesterday. - The state executive board of the Retail Dealers association has recom- mended that the prices of whiskey be put up pending final action on the liquor question in Washington. The meeting postponed action but the fact that prices had been changed was made known. E———— ey A.
