How Much Garbage Each Month. Presumably to learn the amount of waste that is made monthly in the United States and then to institute a chmpaign to curtail such wastes, Herbert C. Hoover, national food dic- tator, has requested every. city in the country to inform him as to its gar- bage collections. Last night Mayor George A. Quigley received the fol- lowing telegram: “Can you arrange with proper au- thority in your city to furnish me reg- ularly by wire each month statjstics of the amount of garbage collected, also amount of garbage collected in corresponding month of 1916, and if possible also amount of grease or fat extracted from garbage each month and during corresponding month of 19162 Begin with Jupe. GREECE LOOKING‘ TO AMERICA FOR AID Premier Venizelos Explains Attitude Towards Entente on Eve of Par- liament Meeting. Athens, July 24.—On the eve of the assembling of parliament, Premier Venizelos received a correspondent of the Associated Press and made the following statement: “The re-assembling of parliament, .which was dismissed by the arbitrary action of Constantine, is the formal resumption of democratic government and the rule of the people, in line with the ideals and principles of which the United States gives a con- spicuous example. No longer have we a royal autocrat ruling, by divine right of kings and not responsible to the people, but rather a constitutional monarchy in which authority is ex- ercised within strict limits. “We look to the United States for continuance of support in working out our own destinies . Greece is now aligned with the Entente allies. Re- lations with the Central powers have been broken and a’state of war now actually exists, as Greek troops are fighting against the Central powers in Macedonia. A formal declaration of war was made by the provisional gov- ernment, and it is unnecessary to re- new t. “The increase of the Greek army and cooperation with Serbia will re- store the Balkan forces to their proper role of defenders of the integrity of the Balkans. - France and the other protecting powers are leaving a free hand, and all the Allies recognize Greece's position as a sovereign and independent nation.” The chamber of deputies convened vesterday, heard Premier Venizelos read the decree of convocation and then adjourned for a few days for the election of officers.” MRS.
