YOU'LL GET A COPY SOON AF- |ALLIES GERMANY TO KNEES Poltical Reforms Would Hasten Peace—Major Purney = Willard Purney, a brother of John Purney and a major the Twenty-fifth Battalion, Second Divi- sion, Canadian Artillery, is spending a short furlough with his brother in this city and, in a statement to news- papermen, expressed the opinion that if internal political changes in Ger- \many would bring about a different type of government the Allied Powers would be more generous with offering peace terms. Unless these changes Dr. in come soon the Allied Powers, daily gaining strength, will slowly but surely bring the Imperial German government to its knees. Major Purney has been wounded in action and is'in the United States directing a recruiting detail at Bos- ton. He expects to be sent back to France about the first of the, month. Major Purney has the distinction of being the first president of the Great War Veterans of Canada. This is & Canadian organization similar to the G. A. R. in the United States. Positive of Allied Victory. Concerning the war Major Purney talks with a certain amount of quiet reserve, but he declares that little by little the German arms are being pushed back and sooner or later the Allied Powers will exert their su- preme effort and Germany and Prussianism will be crushed. Ulti- mate victory, as confident of success as Major Purney is, may be materially delayed unless political reforms come about in Germany soon, he states. The renewed activities of Russia and the entrance of the United States has given the Allies great encouragement and they now feel assured of victory. ‘Wounded at Ypres. Major Purney wears a small gold bar on his coat sleeve, indicative of having been wounded in battle, -and in this connection he relates the fol- lowng episode of his military career which shows him to be fortunate at having escaped with his life: “It was one day during what we called the big push before Ypres,” Major Purney said, “and I was in charge of a company in the first line. At about 6 o'clock in the evening the Germans started a heavy bombard- ment on us, using high explosives and shrapnel. High explosives ex- ploded when they hit the ground and shrapnel exploded in mid-air. The Germans wereé tearing my company to pieces, and suspecting that they were about to attack, I ran to a signal station and telephoned to our heavy artillery in the rear telling them of the facts and askng that they come up front to help us. I had hardly let the telephone down when a high explosive came through the roof of the shanty, exploded inside and the next thing I knew I awoke and found myself buried under a lot of wreckage. My three companions were killed but I was only shaken up and somewhat injured. 1 went back into the fight, the Germans continuing to storm us, and about half an hour later three pieces of shrapnel hit me, two hitting me in the chest and tearing the breast of my coat away, the other hitting me in the left shoulder. A steel shaving mirror and some things in my pocket saved my life.” GRAND CIRCUIT RACES.
