BRITTON BEATS DOWD Paul Battier'a Lesson in Boxing— Victor Never in Danger. Brooklyn, May 9.—In a florcely con- tested battle at the Broadway 8. C. last night Jack Britton, Welterweight champion, showed Mike O'Dowd of St. Paul just how the former Chica’ goan came to win the title. O'Dowd fought like a bulldog, but Britton, dis- playing consummate cleverness and ring generalship, got inside Mike's flerce rushes and drove home dam- aging punches with both hands. It was a bout in which many of those sitting away from the ringside did not get a true angle on what was happening. O'Dowd, boring in savage- ly and blazing away with both hands, often seemed to be landing when in reality Britton was slipping the punches, -blocking them or brushing them aside. It was uncanny how Jack figuratively .writhed around Mike's leads and slid inside with snappy lefts and rights. Not sinck Britton won the title has he given such a masterly ex- hibition as. he showed last evening. As early as the first round Britton showed that he was on business bent, for in that session he twice crossed with terrific rights to the jaw that | were labelled knockouts. Each one of | them staggered O'Dowd from head to heel, but Mike recuperated quickly, shook his touselled head and bored in for more. Britton, by varying margins, had better of all the rounds with the | exception . of the third and fourth, ; which went to O'Dowd by a shade on his ‘agi ness. Mike steadily forced the fighting, but Jack met him coming in with stiff lefts and rights. 0'Dowd seldom landed cleanly to jaw or wind. Most of his leads landed on glove, forearm or protecting shoul- der. Mike's round arm right invari- ably landed on Jack’s back. ‘The men agreed to . make above the agreed lcllln‘ 1‘5 mnm- 147 1.3, 2 A 152 Springfield, Mase, May 9.—Report |f the Springfield; Ponies show en of ‘the first day’s campaign in the sale | SOUrasing results, although no figures of booster tickets for the home games are announced.
