ASYLUM STREET, HARTFORD. THE DAYLIGHT STORE ENfilISH BAG 5 GERMAN AIRPLANES Daring Displayed by Bnhsh Ima l torsSurpnmEventheEnemyl British Headquarters in France, May 4.—British airmen, taking full advantage of the long spell of good weather, are continuing their relent- less offensive aloft both by day and . by night. Within three days they have accounted for fifty-five enemy machines and have carried out many enterpriseg behind the German lines. The German soldiers plainly dislike the continuous presence of the British airplanes, for many unposted letters | captured during the infantry attacks dwell upon ‘the uneasiness the ma- chines cause. One man wrote: The air actlvity is very great. The Eng- lish will soon be taking the very caps off our heads.” The daring of the British lv‘lltora in flying s0 low in the enemy’s coun- iry is one of the striking phases of | the latter-day air tactics. During a recent night raid, with only the stars to gulde them, the Britons swooped down upon their dimly outlined tar- gets and dropped their bombs, barely escaping themselves from the upward biast of the resuiting explosions. During this raid the German de- fending their supply depots brought into play a powerful searchlight, whereupon a Britisher promptly flew | at it like a giant moth, let loose a | lightweight bomb directly over it, and || the lamp went out, to burn no more. The British air ralds on dark nights bring out a great display of enemy fireworks, for in addition to the gun- fire and the bursting shrapnel shells vari-colored rockets are sent hissing indiscriminately into the air. Just now as the May moon is approaching its fulness and lights the nocturnal way, the raiders go “‘over the line” to upset enemy’trains, blow up enemy ammunition stores, royt sleeping en- emy soldiers out of thelk.billets, throw enemy transport colunins into endleas confusion and scatter general de- moralization from the skies for hours at a time., Some of the best fighting the Brit- ish have had recently has been with a flight of brilllant scarlet German machines. At first there were four of these in the flight and all were han- dled with consummate skill, indicat- ing that some of the best German pliots had been gathered into this particular fighting unit. At the first encounter the British brought down one of the ‘“red devils’ leaving the remaining three to scout about the air for several days. Yesterday the sec- ond of the red ' machines fell in flames, Jeaving only two remaining. The second scarlet machine met its Inte while helping to defend a large German formation which had been at- tacked by four British triplanes. The fight was not ended until six of the enemy machines had been sent down, while all four triplanes returned safe-, f 1y. They ported that the pilot the crimson’ scout handled his “bus’ ‘with great skill, deliberately entering the combat during the general melee, which ‘he could easily have’ avolded. It was only by the most .careful maneuvering that a British pilot finally sent a-burst of machine gun bullets into him, BmD HO'JSE CONTEST. l}omplmd ‘Works Must Be Delivered Tomorrow. It is anticipated that there will be a ready sale for all of those which are ‘well made ané upon which a reasonable price has been fixed. It is the first time that any general attempt has been made to provide nesting places for birds, and there are very few places in the city where there are trees upon which the owners could not place one of these shelters to advantage, President Brooks hds, taken an ae- Best Tonic To Gain Fighting -Is Father John's Medicine, i In the struggle for health and re newed strength Father John's Medi- cine is the best tonic and body builder for those who are weak and run down because it js pure and wholesome nourishing food which makes hew flesh and strength and. without usjng alcohol. contannln_b, alco- s hol or narcoli Nudliceny is Free fro ll:oho; or narcotics in any form. ears of success for co and colds.
