Jobmson Won Lamrels Through Personal Endeavor Philadelphia, April 14.—John Johnson, the widely known died at his home here today. was due to heart direase. Mr. Johnson stood in the front rank of his profession, having been retained largely by corporations in many of the great legal cases that have come before the supreme court of the Unit- ed States in the last twenty years.. He appeared before that tribunal in the famous Northern Securities case, the Standard Oil Trust case, the.United States Steel suit, now pending, and in all the anthracite coal trust cases that have been instituted in the last ten years. Mr. Johnson refused positions- as vice presigential candidates and twice declined offers as appointment to the supreme’ bench. John G. Johnson was born in Phila- delphia, his father being a black- smith. Left fatherless in boyhood, he was graduated from the Philadelphia | High school and succeeded in being admitted to the bar in 1863 without going to a law school. Hardly second to his legal prestige was Mr. Johnson’s standing as art connoisseur. The fine collection of the later Peter A. B. Widener owed much of its prestige and value to the fact that it was chosen under Mr. Johnsen’s assistance. Mr. Johnson leaves no direct heirs. He married late in life.
