CKINSON == DRUG 0., .2, NAVAL CORPS AMONG NEW BRITAIN BOYS Recruiting omcers to Organize |/ Lads Between 14 and 16 Because of a very recent order from the bureau of navigation of the navy department which has been received at the United States Naval Recruiting: station at 1003 Main street, Hartford, commanding officers are allowed to advance any petty officer who may be able to pass the prescribed examina- tions regardless of the time they have served in the rating which they now hold. This does not apply to ad- vancing men to be chief petty officers although the order states that this may be done in special cases when the bureau is communicated with. Men formerly did a probationary period in a certain rating before they could be advanced but this ‘order makes it unnecessary providing\ the man is otherwise qualified. This means that many men who may have been out of the service because they had not completed the necessary pe- riod at sea may now return with a reasonable assurity that they shall be advanced in rate if they can pass the other examinations. The first woman to apply for in- formation regarding the navy with th. possibility of entering the service wa Miss Mary W. Hollis of 549 Bluehills avenue, Hartford. Tt was a remark- Jable demonstration of the spirit which should prevail among all the people of this country and which it is hoped will be demonstrated most especially during the three days of the recruit- ing campaign which shall be pursued April 19, 20 and 21. Considerable interest is being shown by the voung lads of Hartford in the Junior Naval corps and a great great many have been enrolled. The object of this organization is to stim- ulate interest {n what is really the first line of defense of the United States: These boyvs will be formed into a regular military battalion and will be instructed by the recruiting force in the rudiments of all that pertains to the navy.- They are under no obligation what-so-ever only that they must be orderly and willing to learn what the men who know have to teach them. It is to. be hoped that New Britain boyvs will answer as readily as the Hartford boys have and that as many as possible will call and get acquainted. Any boy not under 14 years or over 16 years of age is eligible to membarship in this corps. Several of the business men of Hartford have called on the men at the recruiting station for advice and assistance in decorating their windows for the coming recruiting campaign. The recruiting force is willing and anxious to render all assistance pos- sible in getting the best possible re- sults for the present and in impress- ing the citizens of this country with their great dependency on the sea forces of the United States. not only at the present time but also what it has been in the past and what it must be in the future in order that the country may retain the respect and dignity which it should command.
