Ripley Art Co., BRANCH STUDIO “West Main St., New Britain, Conn, News For NEW BRITAIN ‘DAILY BY RUTH Someone was commenting the other day on how strange it is that the modern woman, who has so many creature comforts and conveniences, and so much, less hard work to do, than her grandmother, seems so much less contented and so much more prone to restlessness. Now, granting that our grand- nmothers never were restless (did it never occur to you that many of the assumptions we make 'as to our grandmothers’ states of mind in drawing these contrasts between the old and new may be merely the ex- pression of our own profound igno- rance on the subject?); isn't the fact that- the modern woman has so much less to do an explanation of her rest- lessness rather than an added rea- son why she is inexcusable. Restlessness certainly is a modern disease. And how many people have st? She Must Have “Something to Look Forward to.” A friend of mine came home from a pleasure trip recently. All the way hcme she was energetically planning another trip. “I'm glad we've got that planned,” she said,. that will give us something to look forward to.” That is a phrase she constantly uses. Yet her daily lifé is pleasant and easy. Why is she so restless? Because she hasn’t enough to make her happy? No, because she hasn’t enough to keep her occupied in a way that interests her. She Makes Her Bed and Feeds Her Cat. In trying to analyze what makes people so restless I ran over my circle of acquaintances and asked my- self if each one were restless; and whenever I found a restless discon- tented person, I found someone who had not enough that really interested him or her to do. For instance, the most restless man I know has a soft snap in business. It brings him money and case but not happiness. And the most restless woman is one whose efficient maid takes such good care of her little apartment that all she has to do is to make her own bed and feed her cat. Very poor hard working people are not restless; they may be unhappy but not restless. From Having Too Much. Restlessness is like gout, a disease’ that comes from having too much, rot too little. SIDE TALKS CAMERON Restle sshess 1 “The only thing that makes life endurable is an interest,” says Mar- garet Deland. Have you enough to do that really interests you? If you haven’t, find something. <o after it hard, the wa, you would after clothes or social su- premacy. It is one of the few things in life that won't turn to ashes in your mouth. And, oh, see the chorus! i | company under the personal di- j rection of Samuel Fisher, owner of | several Brooklyn theaters. The cast | is a large one and includes a number | of actors of prominence, among them i David Meyerovitch, well known in | New York as a poet. Others who will be seen are Mr. and Mrs. Karp, come- | dians from the Lyric theater, Brook- Ivn, one of Mr. Fisher's houses, and the Madam Timianoff of Boston Grand Opera House. | LIGHT OPERA FOR SPECIAL FEATURE The Bandit Light Opera company, farnishing the vaudeville headliner { at Keeney's this week presents a ! most entertaining musical comedy, in j which there are a number of good numbers in addition to a breezy dia- logue. The company is made up of capable entertainers and some singers | of marked talent. Belle Watson, the ! girl from Kokoma, has a pleasing spe- cialty while the Four Burkes delight the audience with an original comedy number. The photoplay feature for the bal- i ance of the week will be “The Right : Direction,” with Vivian Martin play- | ing the lead. Tonight thére will be an episode in “The Mystery of the ' Double Cross"” serial. DON'T SUFFER WITH NEURALGIA Musterole Gives Delicious Comfort ‘When those sharp pains go shooting through your head, when vour skull seems as if it would split, just rub a little Musterole on the temples and neck. it draws out the inflammation, soothes away the pain, usually giving quick relief. Musterole is a clean, white oint- ment,” made with oil of mustard. Better than a mustard plaster and does not blister. Many doctors and nurses frankly recommend Mustcrole for sore throat, s, croup, stiff neck, asthma, neuralgia, congestion, p]cunsy, rheu- matism, lumbago, pains and aches of the back or joints, sprains, sore mus- cles, bruises, chilblains, frosted feet— colds of the chest (it often prevents pneumoméa) It is always dependable. ~ 1o, Commonom | “A PAIR OF QUEENS” TEEMING WITH FUN When Mr. ‘Naylor brought “The Dummy,” to the Lyceum he estab- lished a precedent for new plays, but for next week he has done ever bét- ter. Less than a year ago “A Pair 0i Queens” was making New Yorkers 1 SMYTHE WALDACE- e e e roar with laughter, but they were paying $2 for the privilege. Next week local theatergoers may sce a splendid production of the same play and laugh just as heartily, but they have one additional laugh on their New York cousins, for their enjoy- inent will cost only & fourth as much. To give a synopsis of the play might interfere with its enjoyment and the fact that the clever author of *“ A Pair of Sixes” wrote “A Pair Queens” is quite sufficient. The patronage accorded “The Dummy” this week is convincing rroof that New Britain appreciates ! the opportunity afforded by the Wal- ter Naylor Players to see really good plays. The company was never seen to better advantage. GLADYS BROCKWELL AT FOX’S TONIGHT of At Fox's tonight Miss Gladys Brock- well in the William ¥ox production, “Her Temptation,” proved one of the most pleasing featured offered at this | house during the current season. This Fox star has never been seen in a better feature. She will be favorably —_—_—— remembered for her appearance in “One Touch of Sin” and her support- ing cast in “Her Temptation” lends much to the interest shown in her latest production. Crowded houses testified Miss Brockwell’'s popularity vesterday. This feature will be shown for the last time tonight. The Bush- man-Bayne serial, “The Great Secret,” held the crowd until the end of the show which proves the growing popu- larity of this popular ° serial. The Foxfilm comedy, ‘The Footlight Flame,” furnished one of the best laughs of the season. While the Hearst-Pathe News is not advertised as a feature in the Fox program, this reel is at the present time one of the most interesting features in the en- tire show as it is given over almost exclusively to the war news from all over the world. There are two of these news weeklies issued each week and the Fox theater show them in the ‘Wednesday and Thursday and Friday and Saturday programs. Friday and Saturday Miss Ethel Clayton has been selected by the management for the feature opening of the world features (Brady made) in the Friday and Sat- urday program. These sterling mpic- tures will be continued in the Friday and Safurday show only to be inter- rupted from -time to time by the big- gest features that can be secured.
