FISHER SEES FOOD GRISIS AHEAD Yale Economist Advises Planting ol Gardens at Home | (Special to the Herald.) ‘Washington, April 6.—America must | be fed and something must be done to replace the millions who have left the flelds for war and for making the ma- chines of war, says Prof, Irving Fish- er, famous political economist of Yale, in a statement {ssued today through the National Emergency Food Garden commission. Prof. Fisher cites the-increase of food prices since the war in Europe began and points to the need of the ! people planting food gardens in back- yards and vacant lots this Spring as never before, The statement given out | by the commission, which is sending free garden lessons to more than a thousand newspapers follows: “Retail prices of food has risen since the war began up to Dec! 1916 by about 25 per cent. according to the i record of food prices kept by the U. 8. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In ‘Europe general prices have arisen far more. In fact, in Russia up to April 1916, prices of goods in general had arisen, according to Prof, Cassell of ' Sweden 165 per cent. “In this great rise there is involved an exceedingly important monetary cause—currency inflation. But there is also another side to the question, ! that is, the supply of goods, especially { food. “The world is confronted with a ! very grave problem. , Millions of men in Europe have been taken away from the productions of food to fight and | produce ammunition and other war . supplies, thousands ‘'of men are about i to be taken away from_such produc- | tion in America. | “Some great and unusual effort { should be made in America. The Na- . tional Emergency Food Garden com- ! mission of Washington has been or- ganized to meet that need. Its aim is to encourage the making of food gardens for the purpose of increasing the food supply of the country. “The example of the European countries where the women and chil- dren and the men unfit for service have liberally donme ‘the greater part of the production of the country, should show us in American what can be done toward solving the problem. The National Emergency Kood Gar- ‘den COMMISSION BNould help material- | | i ' According to the report issued to- day by the Department of Labor the grocery bill of the average family in this country has jumped from $339.54 in 1913 to $425.54 at the present time. The report shows the heaviest in- crease has been in potatoes which have jumped from $18.96 tp $44.69. This is one of the vegetables that can be planted with good effect in 'the campaign for backyard and vacant lot gardening now being waged by this paper and the food garden commis- sion of Washington. Everything else shows a corresponding increase all along the line. TRAINING IN CANAL ZONE. Panama, April 6—Civilian employes of the Panama Canal have initiated a Plattsburg idea movement at Gatun. Instruction in elementary tactics is be: ing given by officers of the thirty- third infantry ssationed there to guard the locks and spillway of Gatun Lake, and this work is to be supple- mented by a series of popular lec- tures on various branches of military activity. The civilians on the Canal Zone have generally shown a great deal of interest in arrangements for the defense and many have volun- teered for field service. In case of need they will probably be placed on ‘guard duty] relieving the regular sol- dlers to occupy the trenches well be- yond the limits of the Canal. TO LABEL “EXPLOSIVE” EGGS. London, April 6.—According to a new classification of eggs just adopt- ed by the wholesale trade here, eggs will henceforth be sold with directions | “'These eggs not to be: boiled” or “These egags suaranteed to boil.”” The usual label is due to the importation of eggs from distant parts, some of the \importations being dipped in a chemical solution to preserve them, which makes them airtight and causes them to -explode if put into hot wa- ter. .MEXICO ENCOURAGES VEHICLES. Mexico City, April 6.—Automobile and. other vehicles will be permitted to enter Mexico free of duty during the month of April according to an order recently issued by the govern- ment. The state government of Sonora has or- dered 300 cars for this purpose. ‘WAS OLDJEST GERMAN ADMIRAL.
