Kilkemy Castle i | New York, Feb. 1.—Daniel Guggen- peim said last night that he had made in offer to Howard Gould to purchase Jastlegoald and its grounds at Sands Point, overlooking the Sound on. the north shore of Long Island. Negotia- tions have been carried on by cable th Mr. Gould, who is in Europe, but e deal has not been closed. Castlegould was projected about six- en years ago, shortly after Mr. ould married Miss Catherine Clem- ons, the actress. She obtained a Iseparation in 1907. The house was planned orn an elaborate scale and modeled after Kilkenny Castle in Ire- Jand, but, instead of having sixty yooms as has the ancestral home of the Marquis of Ormonde, the Gould house, Mrs. Gold told her architect, Abner J. Haydel, was to have 200 rooms. A wide moat was dug around the buiiding, to which access'was had by bridzes. The raain building is a massive stone structure, more than sixty feet high, on ground above the Sound. Fine Serpentine roads were laid out in the estate, vhich contains more than 200 acres. The castle is about 228 feet long by 110 feet in depth, and is sur- mounted by a tower and turrent, which make it conspicuous from the water. On the second story is a sun- room composed almost entirely of glass. The dining room is of grayish brown oak and the library copied af- ter the famous Bromley room, now shown in the South Kensington Mu- suen. In 1908 the casino near the water- front was constructed, containing bowling alleys, a swimming pool, and many guest rooms. More than $1,- 000,000 was spent on the place by the Goulds hefore their domestic troubles put a stop to the work. The castle has never been completed according to the criginal plans. Architect Haydel brought suit for damages after he was discharged by Mrs. Gould and won a judgment for more than $30,000 in the court of ap- peals in 1907. The builder, Harvey Murdock, sued for $115,000, and the court aliowed him a little more than $50,000. Hunt & Hunt were emploved as architects in Haydel's place. The Gould estate is in one of the choicest sections of Long Island, gear Port Washington, and has a large water frontage on Hempstead Harbor and the Sound. Daniel Guggenheim’s brothers, William and Isaac, own fine estates adjoining the castle, the for- mer’s being the north and the latter’s south of the Gould property. FARM F OR SALE!
