Our part in'the discussion is simply to | pcint out that the maintenance of a trained body of men for the protec- tion of the state is not incons! t with a profound antipathy to war. The most peaceful citizen believes in the maintenance of a trained police force as long as there are hoodlums in ex- istence, and rightly so.” Will Answer Question, Tt has beep the custom following his Sunday evening s, to have an open forum dis- cussion on the toples upon which he touches and last night several of the congregation expressed their opinions. Referring to the subject of compul- sory miiltary training, Skidmore I aman aske@ a most pertinent ques tion. He remarked that the ages of eighteen or nineteen years, when a youth would have to enter the mili- tary service, is the age when a young man generally makes his en- trance into business. He asked whether or not it would disorganize business and hinder the advancement of the youth’ of the country to make his join the army. Dr. Cross was prevented from answering this ques- tion owing to the general discussion but at next Sunday evening's servic he will expound fully upon the ques- tion. of Dr. Would Emulate Christ, Thomas James also spoke from the floor of the church and expressed himself as utterly opposed to militar- ism in any form. He was not in favor of military training. To strengthen his argument Mr. James declared that 1s Christ opposed force and figh or of milit Jes ing and was not in fs ism. ‘“‘“What Christ favored and lieved certainly ought to e enough for us,'” the speaker said. Disagrees With Pastor. Although Dr. Cross had expressed himself as opposed to militarism and a big standing army, he did favor some sort of military training so that a military force might act as does a police department to enforce peace. An elderly woman in the congrega- tion voiced her protest even of this opinion. She declared herself as ab- solutely opposed for force of any kind and cited an instance in her own family. She said that a relative abroad had been drafted into the army. He expressed aversion to fighting and was told by the officers that he would be given a job in a clerical department where he would not have to fight, if he felt that way about it. Instead however, the young | man was placed in the front ranks of the battle line and fell to his death amid shot and shell. The terrors of war having been brought home to the woman thus forcibly, she sald she could see absolutely no justification in armament, Owing to illness, J. E.
