N. iyvears ago Tax Collector Loomis ieach year collected more taxes than {the previous year, this ratio cannot ALMOST MILLION IN CITY’S TAXES Collector Loomis Turns More Than $900,000 Into Coffers The annual statement of Tax Col- lector Bernadotte Loomis, compiled to noon Saturday. shows that he has collected almost a million dollars in taxes during the past vear. The figures total $962,632.23, against $823,164.70 for the year of 1915. Al- though since he took office three has be continued for as the back taxes are collected and the debts of the taxpayers paid off the sum to be col- lected each year will gradually be re- duced to the annual amount of taxes levied. If, however, the grand list and taxing system is materially changed the collector may get more chances to add to his laurels as a collector of the coin of the realm for the city. Noble. President G. M. Landers was also present. THREW DISHES AROUND. ‘Mrs. Andruss Has Been Trying . to Start Divorce Proceedings. Mrs. Emma Andruss of 50 South Burritt street must hchave in the fu- ture and keep any further dish-break- ing stunts a secret from the police, if she does not wish to run the risk of passing, at least, 15 days in jail. She is now on probation as a result of a rampage at her home Friday night, which resulted in Policeman William P. McCue making a hurried trip to the Andruss home. In police court Saturday he informed Judge James T. Meskill that it looked as if a Kansas tornado had struck the place. ‘Yes, I did it and will break the rest of the dishes when I get home” was her statement. as she finished a brief out- iine of her conduct. ‘“Fifteen days in jail,” was the comment of Judge ‘Meskill. After court, upon the pleas of her husband, Charles E. Andruss, Jr., probation was adced to the dail sentence. Mr. Andruss testified that he called for police aid when his wife began throwing dishes about promiscuously and used improper langvage before the children. In her testimony, Mrs. that she had been trying tc get her husband’s consent to a divorce for the past year but that he had refused to give his consent or aid. This is the reason, she said, that she acted so. She also expressed the intention continuing such rrocedure as will cause trouble until the divorce Is agreed upon by her husband.
