INFERNAL MACHINE SENT Governor of Utah and Family in Dan- ger From Box Left Standing Against House, Salt Lake City, Dec. 26.—Governor William Spry and members of his family narrowly escaped death or se- rious injury yesterday from an in- fernal machine. A neighbor, sweep- ing the snow from the walk between bottles of nitroglycerine, to the tops of overturned the infernal machine, which rested against the corner of the Spry homestead. While no clue as to the plotters has been discovered it -is believed that members of the I. W. W. attempted to carry out threats made against the governor for not stopping the execu- tion of Joseph Hillstrom. A letter was received by Governor Spry from Chicago about two weeks ago telling him that an attempt to take his life would be made during the holidays. The infernal machine was made of hollow concrete, in which were two bottls of nitroglycerine, to the tops of which were attached fulminating caps. To the caps were attached small copper wires, which were being slowly eaten away by acid. The machine probably would have exploded last night. It contained | enough explosives to destroy half a | block.
