In keeping with its recent course, Unit- ed States Steel was the dominant fea- ture, its first saie of 25,000 shares at 118 to 119 placing it 1% points over its previous record. New maxi- mums were made by Anaconda, Utah, Miami and Ray Coppers at advances extending from fractional to almost four points. Central Leather and Maxwell Motors achieved similar rec- ords. Rails, shipping issues and some munitions and equipments were disposed to react. Trading in the first hour totalled 675,000 shares a record for over ten yvears. Steel and the coppers con- tributed over half of this total. These issues made higher prices in the un- ceasing activity of the second hour. Steel selling at 120 with extensions of 1 to 2 points in Smelting and In- spiration. Republic and Crucible Steel's Colorado Fuel and Studebaker and Maxwell moved higher but rails and marines continued uncertain or heavy. Realizing and short selling were at their height at midday but prices held firm where new gains were not registered. Bonds were ir- regular. Steel reacted to 1181 during the midday with increased heaviness in marines and Mexican Petroleum. This was offset by a spurt in rails, Read- ing gaining over 2 points with 1 to 2 for Union Pacific, St. Paul and New York Central. Close—Reading’s rise to a new rec- ord and a sharp reaction of over five points from the high in Steel were the features of the last hour. The closing ‘was irregular.
