This rainy day was not a particularly inspiring one for the boys in camp but the arrival of an- other bundle of Heralds, date of July 1, served to keep the men interested for some time and then they had plenty of subjects to talk about. It seemed like home again to be able to talk in- telligently about happenings back in New Britain. Co. I Does First Guard Duty. No wthat we are firmly established here in Camp Holcomb camp life is really beginning to amount to some- thing and the boys are getting a real taste of military life. The New Brit- ain members are confined in camp ev- ery third night when the third bat- talion does guard du During that night this battalion is responsible for the safety of the entire camp. As was the c: at Niantic, Company I was the first company to be detailed to guard duty and believe me, the boys from little old New Britain were a proud lot when, early in the evening, they shouldered their loaded rifles and marched out to take up the long vigil. Possibly they did throw out their chests a little more than usual and posssibly their stride did lengthen out a little more like that of the old time soldier, but they were justified and they did their work well, too. Rodman Chamberlain was sergeant of the guard and was a very worried young man lest something should go wrong. During that long to be re- membered night seven shots were fired within our hearing and at each one the Company I bhovs took a firmer grasp on their rifles, thought rapidly of home and friends, then turned their faces grimly toward whence the shots came. There was no cause for worry, however. That was our first experi- ence in the line of active military duty ! and border patrol and so wide awake | were the guardians that it would have taken an invisible garment to have sneaked any “Greaser” into camp. Men Are All Strapped. Some of the bo: with musical tastes feel that possibly the social side of the camp might be improved upon and they are trying to do it. We call it singing down here, but in the best regulated families it Is called something else. Just as soon as we can get an ocarina, however, there will be some real music and several of our genuine mus ns (they say they are real musicians and T suppose they ought to know) will get. their chance. Then, to the accompaniment of the ocarina, real music will issue forth from the throats of our silver voiced warbling sextet, just organ- ized. In the interim Minot, Bartlett and Pickup and Company Musicians Anderson and Bigge do their best, which is justly appreciated and for which they receive due credit. Spillar Is Camp Comedian. Stories of army life tell ever: “pet,” a member who is a friend of all, and by his general good humor keeps all in the best of spirits. our camp is certainly regular we have such a man and he is none other than Max Spillar. Max is a doughty little German, and even before we departed from New Britain had earned the title of “Charley Chaplin.” Max is a walk- ing joke; in fact comedy and Max are synonymous. But Spillar has other claims to fame, and last evening he demonstrated his physical prowess by giving a wrestling exhibition showed him to be superior to most of the members of this company. Max has suddenly become imbued with a fiendish desire to try a half-Nelson, a hammerlock or some other of his fa- holds on Whiskers Carranza is regarded as Mexico champion wrestler because of his slip- pery ways and the manner in which he wrestles from embarrassing situa- tions with your Uncle Sam. ‘While there is little to plained of here, the water not agreeing with the men but they will soon get accustomed to it. As it is they are all fifty per cent. better than anyone believed they would be. Our time thus far has been spent getting our new equipment in proper shape for federal service. Believe me, none of the “militia standards” is accepted here. PRINTING In Many Different Languages, BY SKILLED UNION MEN Moderate Prices. LINOTYPE COMPOSITION. Office Hours: 8 a. m. to 6:15 p. m. Neither do we hesitate to say that many of these infantile deaths are occasioned by the vse of narcotic preparations. Drops, tinctures and soothing syrups sold for children’s complaints contain more or less opium or morphine. ~They are, in considerable quantities, deadly poisons. In any quantity, they stupefy, retard circulation and lead to congestions, sickness, death. ~Castoria operates exactly the reverse, but you must see that it bears the signature of Chas. H. Fletcher.
