The navy department, through Secretary Daniels and Admiral Fletcher, has or- dered to come to Stamford on Friday, June 9, and to remain here until Sunday, June 11. They will be anchored in the harbor as near to the shore as the water will permit. This will he the first time that battleships have appeared in Stamford harbor. Tt is expected that great crowds of peopie will visit the ships. Invitations have been sent to the state officers, members of the general assembly, mayors, selectmen, judges, congressmen and a host of others. But it is explained that nobody need wait for an invitation printed in copper- plate, with the city’s seal at the to there won’'t be any latchstrings in Stamford during thees four days_ in June. Every one who ever lived in Stamford is asked to consider it an “old-home week;” all Stamford’s neighbors, in towns in Connecticut and New York state, are cordially in- vitd to participate. On the first day of the celebration Thursday, June 8, there will be a parade of about 5,000 of the chil- dren in the public and parochial schools. The high school (which has nearly a thousand students) and most of the other schools will have floats, some of them illustrating historical subjects. Some of the paraders will also wear special costumes. The boy scouts, of which there are several troops in the town, will act as aides. School superintendents and principals and school boards from neighboring towns are invited to review the pa- rade. A big reviewing stand will be erected on Main street. After the parade, there will be singing and folk- dancing in Hallowe’en park, near the seashore. Several hundred the children will form a mammoth Amer- ican flag. There will be games suit- able for the children. Tn the eve- ning, in the new assembly hall of the high school, which seats 1,200 people, the Stamford Male Chorus will give a popular concert. On Friday it is expected that some vessels of the United States navy will be in Stamford harbor. That day is to be devoted largely to sports in the harbor and on the shore. En- tries are being invited for a motor- | boat race, in which hoats from other towns will take part. A fine program of water-sports has been arranged at Hallowe’en park. There will also be a baseball game between two good teams. On Friday and Saturday eve- nings, there will be open-air dancing. The place chosen for this is on Bed- | fora street just north of Broad, near | the center of the city. The dancing | floor will be a section of new wood- block pavement, which is perfectly smooth and will be made as clean as any dancing floor. Strings of electric | lights will illuminate the place and | a brass band will furnish music. | Big Parade Planned. { Saturday will be the big day of the | celebration. A mammoth parade will | start after 10 a. m. One division of | it will illustrate, by means of floats and hundreds of people in suitable | costumes, the part taken by Stamford | in the various wars in which this ! country has engaged, beginning with | the French and Indian War, in which | numerous Stamford men took part, and continuing with the Revolutionary war, the war of 1812, the Mexican war, the Civil war and the war with Spain. The soldiers of the present will be represented by companies of the Connecticut Coast Artillery from Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury, Bridge- port and other places; Stamford’s new company of field artillery, which will be mounted, with more than 100 horses and fleld equipment; the fa- mous New Haven Grays, the Gover- nor’s Footguard and numerous other organizations. The soldiers of the fu- ture will be represented by a strong force of boy scouts, in uniform. Another division will contain fire- men, and another and a_very large one will be made up of fiaternal and patriotic societies, many of these to have, besides a great number of men, handsomely decorated floats, all in harmony with the idea of the parade, which is to plcture Stamford’s his- tory and its progress, especially in the last quarter of a century, during which the population has grown from 18,836 to 40,000, and its wealth has quadrupled. With very few excep- tions, the growth of Stamford as a manufacturing town and as a place of residence during the last 25 yea exceeds that of any city in Connec- ticut. The parade will end at Ial- lowe’en park, where some of the floats and many of those who march in procession, with numerons othe appropriately costumed, will form a pageant or a series of spectacles ex- pected to be novel as well as highly picturesque. After a great parade, a will be served to visitors, afternoon will be devoted to an ath- letic meet, for which the hes h- letes in high schools of Connecticut way. a division of four battleships of luncheon and the | and elsewhere have sent entrles.
