James Dean, a spare conductor employed Christmas night by the Con- necticut company, had two fingers chewed by an infuriated foreigner, who attacked him on a West Main street car near Emmons place. The car was crowded and Dean asked the foreigner to step aside to allow him to pass. The latter refused and Dean edged his way to the rear. It is said he shoved the foreigner, who jumped on him without warning, grabbed him by the throat and pushed him back over a seat. Getting the conductor’s fingers in Lis mouth, the foreigner chewed them so that blood spurted over a number of passengers. A number of men came to Dean's res- cue and succeeded in tearing the foreigner away. The latter reached for his hip pocket but a passenger grabed his wrist and prevented him | from drawing a knife. The foreigner was hustled off the car despite the entreaties of the indignant passengers who wanted Dean to call the police and have him arrested. Christmas eve a foreigner became angry when the conductor remon- strated against him falling against some women every time the car started, He told the foreigner to be- have himself and received a punch in the face for his edvice.
