CHRISTMAS [TWO MOST POWERFUL FORCES IN WORLD The President of the .United States and the Pope of Rome, Say Swiss Army Head. (Correspondence of the Asso. Press.) Berne, Switzerland, Dec. 3.—Gener- al Wille, commander in chief of the Swiss army, a soldier of the school of Hindenburg and Joffre, today ex- pressed the belief that the time had come for “The two most powerful forces in the world” to combine to put an end to the European war. These two forces, he said, were the president of the United States and the pope of Rome. General Willi also discussed with the correspondent of the Associated Press the subject of military prepar- edness, describing that condition as not only a defense of the state and its citizens, but as a powerful force for discipline and efficlency in civil life and the pursuits of industry and com- merce. Gen. Wille said he was not himselt a catholic, yet the powerful influ- ence exerted by the pope was recog- nized in Europe without regard to re- ligion. ADDS NEW TERROR TO AERIAL RAIDS Asphyxiating Bombs Venice in Dropped on Attack on November 18. (Correspondence of the Asso. Press.) Venice, Dec. 2.—The use of as- phyxiating gasin the bombs dropped on | Venice has added a new terror to aerial raids. These asphyxiating bombs have been used before in the trenches along the fighting line, but not until the air raid of November 18 was the deadly gas used in bombs dropped on cities, either here or anywhere else so far as is known. The air raid on the 18th was not known at the time, as the military au- | thorities exercised a strict censorship. Tt was not a serious raid, in people injured or damage done, but its chief importance was in bringing for the first time the shower of asphyxiating , bombs.
