Recent reports of the fighting in France and elsewhere speak of great activity on the part of military aviators on both sides, but as winter sets in they are naturally hampered by bad weather. | TO RENT—Six rooms, all eymour street. improve- ments, 44 12-9-5dx TO RENT—Two tenements of four rooms, up and downstairs, all im provements. How -the Reforms of Recent Times Have Been Bearing Fruit. (From the New York World.) True to her record as a land of surprises, Ireland. shows an increase of population unknown for 70 years, just when the great European na- tions are killing off their strong men, starving women and bemoaning the dearth of ‘babies. For the quarter nding September 30, with a birth rate of 20.8 and a death rate of only 13.4, i Ireland’s net increase is 9,598. How great a change this is, one sees in the old statistics. In 1801, Ireland had 5,319,867 population. In 1911, the latest census, she had 4,- 381,951, The great ¢hange came | from the famine of 1846-7:— 1841 ... 8,175,124 1881.. 5, 1851 6,552 1891.. 4 1861 5,789,967 1901 ..4,458, 775 1871 5,412, 1911.. 4,381,951 So rapid was the growth up to 1846 that it is common to reckon ,174, Si‘fl ,704,75 4 the loss of population by the famine as 2,000,000. Loss of life was great; and emigrants not' only left their country in swarms but long continued to draw relatives after them, chiefly to this country. Better times show in the diminish- ed decrease since 1891, The home rule prospect, the rebirth of industries ond the land purchase measures have | made the country less “‘disthressful,” as strikingly shown in the decrease nf pauperism. But the great change is lin emigration. To this countx‘y alone WANTED. WANTED--Experienced stenographer in local factory office. . Address. ful- ly. Box X31X, Herald Office. 12-9-tf came 914,000 Irish immigrants in the California gold decade. In 1905 the number was 52,945; in 1914. 24,- 688. Last quarter there were but 3,- 511 emigrants to all countries. At this rate there is no reason why the population of Ireland should not continue in the upward course with ‘a contented and prosperous country.
