St. Johns, N. F., Nov. 24.—The loss of the Greek market-for cod fish, as & result of war conditions, has seri- ously affected the fisheries' interests of this colony. On November 10, on instructions from the imperial author- ities, a proclamation was issued pro- hibiting the export of foodstuffs from Newfounaland to Greece. At that time thirteen vessels with cargoes of fish from Labrador were in this harbor preparing to proceed to Greek ports. The annual export of cod to Greece amounts to-about 7,800,000 pounds. This so-called soft-cured fish finds a market only in Greece, Italy and | Spain. Because of the embargo the miarket price for this class of fish has dropped here a dollar a quintal (112 pounds.) Scotch Port in the Orkneys Lonesome Place Until War Broke Out. London, Nov. 15.—Kirkwall, where many of the American merchantships | | Bave been taken for examination by fame—as far as the average Lon- doner is concerned—out of the pages of the latest American note. Probably few Londoners more than suspected the existence of Kirkwall until they read about it in the Ameri- can note. It is a rather obscure island county of Orkney, and its pop- ulation is less than four thousand. But it has a magnificent harbor, in which the 205 or so captive ships might all ride safely at anchor at the same time. But when it is remem- bered that Kirkwall is located 26 miles north of John-o'Groat’s, which is the extreme northern point of Scotland, it is seen how far the har- bor is from the ordinary purposcs | of trade. The American crews could find no better harbor in which to spend enforced leisure nor better sight-see- ing of the antiquarian order. For Kirkwall is environed by the past— cathedral, palace and castle are all of the Middle Ages, and nearby are great Stonehenge circles of an even remoter era. Nowhere are the an- cient remains better preserved.
