General Goethals has made a survey of the cut, but has set no date for the open- ing of the canal. FHe merely says that the dredging will go on inde- finitely. He has withdrawn his resig- nation from canal work and will re- main in charge until conditions on the canal become settled permanently. Almost every city in New England has gone overwhelmingly Republican this fall. For example, New Haven went almost strongly Republican as ‘Waterbury went Democratic. Does the Republican wave pass over Water- tury? We think not. Waterbury is different for a num- ber of reasons. For a good many years independent voting has been the habit here. Most sensible voters have come to the conclusion that electing a Democratic or Republican Mayor in Waterbury is not going to have any tremendous influence on who is going to be our next president —the argument of the very strict party man. Waterbury for years has looked at local questions from the 1ocal point of view, and national ques- tions from the national point of view. The more we have done it the better satisfled we are with doing it. Then, again, there are certain ques- tions on which Waterbury feels strongly. It is not a town friendly to the saloon influence in politics. It is not a town that believes that law- vers as a class make the best kind of office holders. It especially resents the way in which the Legislature has bcen used over and over again by lawyer members for their own bene- fit. It further disapproves of the way in which the Legislature through legal subtlety has been used as a dominating factor for the determina- tion of local questions. There happened to be in this latest election a combination, whether just- ly or injustly, of all the eauses mak- ing Waterbury more than usually in- dependent and watchful, prejudiced, if you please. That Waterbury is so [Yixed in its local independent view- point makes it a different city from most others for straight partisan ap- peals. — e Ida A. Peterson vs. Gustave A. Peterson.
