Is Remarkable Old Man. In many respects Horace Johnson is the most remarkable man in Con- necticut and one thing is certain, there s not a man in ‘this or anv other. state who, at ninety-two years of age, cdn surpass him for preserv- ing his youth. | Those who, from reading mbled aceounts of Mr. John- gont or who from heéaring his name &0 . coftstantly mentioned as ‘“tha | weathef, prophet” have come toy think of him as a childish eld man ity, had best change their minds for they are wrong. Or, if still skeptical, 2 visit to his home in Middle Hadduin' | and Mr. John: | will' convince then, gon always extends the right hand of welcome to his guests whether : they be friends of long standing or new comers who he has never secn before. = He is not a childish old man. He certdinly ! 1s not suiferihg from senile debility ! as a parry of wits and general know- | ledge and inteligence with any skep- | tical persons will convince them. On the contrary he is a remarkable spac. imen of manheood. He is a phileso- Pher and a close student as well ag | a scientist of note, a man who bases bis opinions on years of scientific re< séarch and not on the wild, hapha- zard guess of the moment. His sharp, clear and explicit an- swers, hig keen memory for almost a century past and his general air of intelligence will gonvince anybody with ‘whom he talks that he is not a fanatic, but a remarkable old gen- tleman, for although he has seen the passing of ninety-two summers he stands today a more héalthy man than many half his ‘age. His hearing I3 acute, his brain clear, his bedy erect and ‘all ‘of his organs, except his eves. which are now beginning to weaken are in apparently perfect condition and he walks about his native town with a sprightly step, ualng only a light cane. House Full Of 0ld Relics. Horace Johnson's father was a ship- builder by trade and built the hcuse in which the old gentleman now lives. Any guest of Mr. Johnson who is for- .tunate enough to be taken into the house by the old man is indeed lucky for the interior surpasses many a museum. In the first place every pieec of furniture in the building i3 old and antique with an interesting bit of history attached to it. On the lawn and outside of his house Mr. Johnson, has according to his own words, $2,000 worth of 'rare sea shells collected in all parts of the world. In the house he has bhetween thirty or forty old clocks, each with its history. One, a big grandfather's clock, speaks for itself. In another room he has an old clock which used to. stand in his bearding house in Hartford when he was a boy. In an- other roem, beneath a glass doms, i8 a remarkable clock set in a beauti- ful design in gold, the only one in ! existance so far as is known. Valuable Historical Relics, ' In his front hall Mr. Johnson has another collection of curios. There are a pair of slipper buckles thag were worn by the famous French general, the Marquis De Lafayette, while fight- ing with General Washington during the revolution. There are two car- riage handles from the carriage in which President Andrew Jackson once rode. On a corner is a flag staff taken from' a Confederate regiment during the civil war and nearby is a rifle taken at Harper’s Ferry and a drum stick wielded by some brave drummer boy at the bloody battle of Antietam. He alsé has an old sword he carried himself while doing inilitary duty and points proudly to a silk American flag given by Cheney brothers of South Manchester, in recognition of a pa- triotic article he once wrote. Upon the wall is a huge pair of horns which Mr. Johnson says are the larg- est horns ever seen in these parts, with the exception of greenhorns, He will have his little jo Facing each other above oppesite doorways are two ancient Chinese gods. A third cane of which he s very proud was carried by Cornelius Vanderbilt when he was a young man. 1t was given to Mr. Johnson by Mz, Vandérbilt's son. Although his ninety-two years rest lightly on Uncle Horace's shoulders and he does not feel the chill of life's winter creéping into his bones, he realizes that his time on this terres- tlal sphere is short and in his more serious moments remarks that the book of his life is almost a finished story, yét he seems to leak forward t{o that inevitable day with no fears. 1t is the will of his Maker and the old gentleman is not afraid. He has lived a long and useful life and will be ready when God calls him. His parting words of yestérday demon- strate the sincerity of the man. “Well, you will prabably never see me again, unless we meet in Heaven.” “Even though you dre old in years vou are not old in body Mr. Johnson.” “Ah, yes,” sadly smiled the vener- able sage as he shook his visitor's hand in farewell, “yes, but we must all come to it. We must all come it and I realize it.” Horsfall Straws Reduced All of those fine Straw Hats that cannot be equaled anywhere.
