TELEPHONE 317.2 A STEAMER ESCAPES Anglo-California Withstands At- tack of Submarines for Four Hours Queenstown, July 6.-—With nine dead sailors stretched on her deck, eight men lying wounded below and her sides riddled with shot and shell, the - British steamship Anglo-Califor- nian, a vessel of 7,333 tons gross, bound from Montreal, steamed into Queenstown harbor yesterday -after having withstood the attack of a Ger- man submarine for four hours. The ship’s escape from destruction was accomplished with no other means of defenee than the indomitable spirit of her captain and crew,' combined with masterly seamanship, which en. abled her to frustrate the efforts of her assailant to torpedo her. The story of how Captain Parslow stood on the' bridge of the Anglo- ! Californian amidst a rain of shot and calmly directed the movements of his ship until he was killed by a shell, and of how his place was ta- ken by his son until British destroy- ers appeared and the submarine was compelled to flee, was told by the survivors. Montreal, July 6.—Fifty Americans and Canadians were among the crew of 95 aboard 'the British steamer Anglo-American. Paujllac, France, July 6.—The Spanish steamer Juan arrived - here yesterday with the captain and sevepn men of the French schooner Hiron- delle. London, July 6.—~The Noarwegidn bark Fiery Cross has been sunk by a German submarine ‘seventy miles southwest of the S¢illy Islands. Her crew of 18 men, after spending 20 hours in open boats, landed at Swan- sea. Among the crew are six Amers clans. ' The Fiery /Cross was a vessel of 1,448 tons gross. Norwégian Steamer Blown Up. The open- ing ‘session of the convention will be held tonight, when Bishop, Luther B. Wilson, of New York, the presi- dent, and the Rev. P. A. Baker, of Westerville, Ohio, the general super- intendent, will deliver their biennial reports at two meetings to be held simultaneously in different halls on the convention pier. ' John G. Wooley of Madison, Wis., will address both gatherings on ‘‘The spirit of the road.” Bishop Wilson will open one meeting and Bishop G. M.
