STEAMER AND YACHT | COLLIDE IN SOUND Two Persons Killed and Three Injured in Crash During Fog New York, June 14—C, K. G. Billings’ steam yacht Vanadis reached Glen Cove, L. 1., early today with the bcdy of John J. Brown, of Boston, one of the two victims of a collision in Long Island Sound last night between the yacht and the big white passenger steamer Bunker Hill, of the Metro- pelitan Line. The body of the other vietim, George H. Kendrick, also of Boston, was brought back to New York by the Bunker Hill when she returned eaerlier in the night with a hole in her side thirty feet high and nearly twenty feet. lons. Three: Others Injured. ' Brown and Kendrick and three others, injured in the accident, were pessengers on the Bunker Hill bound for Boston. The Vanadls raimmed the passenger steamer in & thick fog off Eaton's Neck at the eastern end of Huntington' Bay, The yacht backed cut of the hole in the Bunker Hill's side with her bow smashed and fes- tooned. with iron bedsteads and other furniture swept from the statercoms of the Sound liner. Brown ‘was ‘picked up from the water by the crew of the yacht with both legs broken. He died an hour later, Kendrick was crushed to death as he sat at dinner in the dining saloon of the Bunker Hill. Coroner Begins ¥robe. The life boats of the Bunker Hill were swung out on their davits and filled with passengers, but when the cfficers discovered that the steamer was intact below the water line they bade the passengers return to the aecks. . Stories told by some passen- gers regarding the behavior of the Bunker Hill's crew await officlal in- vestigation. It was said that some of the negro deck hands rushéd for the boats and refused to surrender their rlaces. The coroner at Glen cove be- gan an investigation this morning s00n after the Vanadis errived.. The passengers injured in the col- lision, none -seriously, were: May, ‘Wightman of Boston; Jarvis C. Bell of Chicago, a fnember of tthe Ameri- can commission for relief of Belgium, end Mrs. Martha Waugh, of Philadel- phia. \ Brown’s death woun@ was received while he lay in bed, in the opinion of Captain Farrington of the Vanadis. Parents to Clain: Body. When the Vanadis backed away from the Bunker Hill she carried on her sharp bowsprit, amid other wreckage, two iron beds. In one’of these beds, Captain Farrington be- lieves, Brown lay, ana rell, bruised, cut and unconscious, into the water 8g the colliding. craft cleared each cother affer the blow.. Word was re- ceived early today that his parents were on their way to Glen Cove to claim his body. The Vanadis lay, a sorry spectacle, at anchorage at Glen Cove today, pre- peratory to dry docking. Her entire front was crushed in, her bowsprit was broken off short, and her forward timbers ripped, torn and splintered to within three feet of tthe water line, It probably will require three weeks or more to make her seaworthy again. Two Blows Struck. Two blows, apparently, were struck by the yacht, the second after thes recoil of the first. When the Vanadis anchored early today Mr. Billings came ashore, noti- fied the deead man’s parents and tele- phoned Coroner Luyster. The coro- ner went aboard ‘the vanadis and took the statements of her officers and wireless operator. Mr. and Mrs. ‘Billings and Andrew McLeisch of Chicago, Mrs, Billings’ father, left for New York soon thereafter. Repaired in Week, The Bunker Hill, examined in dry cdock today, was found to have sus- {ained injuries which can be repaired within a week The Old Colony, a sister ship, will sail from Boston to- night, it was announce@, to take her place in the interim. An executive hearing was set for late today by the steamboat inspec- tion service to fix the blame for the collision. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Secretary A, H.
