Dr. Abbot Captures Emblem For Re- searches in Solar Radiation. ‘Washington, May 20.—Announce? ment was made today by the Smith- sinian Institution that Dr. Charles G. Abbot, director of its astro-physical observatory, has - just been awarded the Rumford Medal by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for his researches in solar radiation. This medal, established through a donation from Benjamift Thompson, Count Rumford, in 1796, to the academy, is annually given to American scien- tists who make discoveries or conduct researches tending to advance the study 'of light and heat. Dr. Abbot'is said to have measured the amount of heat emitted by the sun and to have its variability. CIVIL RIFLE TEAMS. To Complete to Determine Club Champion of United States. ‘Washington, May 20.—Civilian teams will participate for this time this year, probably in July, national match to determine the club champion of the United States. In announcement today the National Rifle association of ~ America, under whose auspices the match will be held annually, said the proposed competi- tion had been approved by the war department.
