Springfield, 31.—A strike on the Springfield, Palmer and ‘Westfield divisions of the Springfield Street Railway system went into ef- fect at 3 o'clock this morning when the crews of the last all-night cars run their cars into the barns. The strike order followed a conference between officials of the New England Investment & Security company and members of the executive board of the local trolleymen’s union late ves- terday afternoon, at which time the grievances of the trolleymen were discussed. The officials of the com- pany acceded to the first request, pro- remained at work. They refused to consider the second request entirely, but they expressed a willingness to arbitrate the third re- quest. The men insisted on the ac- ceptance of all three requests, stat- ing emphatically that they should go outhon strike if they were not grant- ed. % Voted on Strike. The action regarding the three con- ductogs discharged by the company severdl weeks ago was taken by the members of the local trolleymen's union Monday night, following a con- ference last I'riday with officials of the street railway company. The members of the union voted Monday on the question of a strike, the ques- tion being presented to the men for a “yes” or ‘no” vote in the form of the following question: “The company refuses to accede to your demands in regard to reinstat- ing the three conductors, but will consider the advisibility of putting in transfer registers. Are you in favor of enforcing your demands, even to ! the suspension of work?" Harmer of the company called up John H. Reardon of Worces- ter, a member of the national execu- tive board, who is handling the trol- ieymen’s side of the case, and in- lfr\rxnef] him that it would be agree- | able to the officials of the company | to meet the representatives of the union at 3 o'clock. v At this conference the formulated by the union officials were discussed separately. The first one relating to the installing of registers for recording transfers was discussed favorably by the officials of the com- pany, but on the question of with- holding any discharges for alleged irregularities until new registers are installed, President Harmer, for the | company, gave a point blank refusal. Both sides argued the matter at length, but no agreement could be | reached, The third request met with a spirited discussion, which eventually resulted in the . company’s offer to arbitrate the discharge of the three men in accordance with .the agree- ment between the company and the men accepted in October, 1912, The men, however, refused to accept ar- bitration. Recommendation Not Adopted, The trolleymen based thelr refusal to arbitrate the discharge of the three conductors on the ground that the recommendation of the chairman,of the board of arbitration that hantiled the fivg cases of ilar nature last summer that trans Tegisters be ins stalled diad not be¥n' -adopted.
