No Choice Registered. Mr. Osborn of Branford said there had not been a candidate in his town since 1870, and Mr. Martin of Orange {and Chairman Eaton of North Ha- ven said as much for their candl- dates. The first ballot was then taken | and resulted as follows: Donovan Wilkinson Patten (1av10rd It was the story of last week and { was unchanged in any materital way in the six ballots following. After the eighth ballot Mr. Bron- son suggested an open declaration ana asked for a roll call. There were but five who favored it. The next bal- lot showed no change but the eleventh was declared void, as it had thirty- seven votes on the count. The next one, the twelfth, was thrown out for the same reason. ‘Wilkinson Votes Scatter. On the seventeenth ballot Wilkin- son votes began to scatter, Donovan and Patten gaining, but neither gain- ing enough to encourage them. By the twenty-first Wilkinson began to rally and the result was once more near the normal figure. After the twenty-third Mr. Peasley of Cheshire suggested that at 9 p. m. the lowest man dropped out, at 9:30 the lowest at that time and at 10 the iowest again. Mr. Martin of Orange wanted to know what would happen at 2 a. m. Mr. Osborn of Branford | cbjected to the plan, saving it was in effect gag law. The plan was favored i by Mr. Aaronson of Ansonia. Tuttle With Osborne, Senator 'Tuttle stood with Mr. Os- born, saving that the caucus could { mot pass a vote of the sort suggested by Mr. Peasley and have it binding. On the forty-seventh ballot Gay- lord went to 10, being his high water mark up to that time, and he gained another on the next ballot and two on the following, the fiftieth, He went back to 10 on the next ballot, however. On the fifty-third ballot Gaylord went to 14 and one vote was cast for Simeon E. Baldwin. Gaylord dropped again and had but 8 votes on the fifty-ninth ballot. After the sixty-fourth ballot Sena- tor Tuttle moved to adjourn at 11, if no nomination was made by that time. The chair protested that 11 was too carly and asked the senator from the Twelfth if he “had a date.” He de- clined to answer, but insisted on a vote on his motion. It was amended to make the hour 1 a. m., and the amendment was carried, hilariously. ‘Wilkinson Comes Back, The ballot went on without inci- dent except that the seventieth and seventy-first were void. On the seventy-sixth ballot Wilkinson went up to 12, having the largest number of votes on that ballot. At 10:45 p. m. a recess was taken by general consent until 11 o’clock. Al that time Senator Tsbell said that the caucus was not getting anvwhere and he was inclined to move to ad- journ until next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. Tt was suggested by one man that he could not arrive by that hour. It started a debate as to the Dbest time, in the course of which Mr. | Perry of New Haven said there should be a conference with the candidates and endeavor to get the low man to drop out or else introduce a resolu- tion declaring the place vacant. Tt wae finally agreed to adjourn until next Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. DECREASE $16,050,500. Berlin, Jan. 26, Via London, Jan. 27, 11:06 A.
