CHARLIE WHITE ILL, BEECHER SUBSTITUTED Wiliie Wil Have Chance to Win the Champion h» Tonight. New York, Jan. 27.—Charlie White will not meet Freddie Welsh in Madi- son Square Garden tonight. The Chicago’ lightweight was forced to postpone his bout with the world's champion indefinitely yesterday af- ternoon when he found himself threat- ened with an attack of pneumonia. The management has engaged Willie Beecher to act as a substitute for White, and Welsh will get into action despite White’s illness. Those who bought tickets at the advance sale will have their money refunded, as the prices for tonight's show will be only half of those which were to have rTuled in the event that White kept his engagement. White has been suffering from an intestinal disorder for some time and the case became somewhat aggravated on Friday, when a feverish condition sel in. In order to get this out of his system White decided upon long walks, and in the bad weather that has prevailed for the last few days he caught cold and yesterday developed an incipient case of pneumonia. White Had High Fever. All day he had a high fever and lcoked to be in for a severe siege of iliness. However, medical aid was celled in the nick of time and White's fever was reduced last night. It was announced that it was not likely that he would develop pneumonia, but he was in bad condition and would havae to stay in bed for about a week. Tt was a lucky circumstance that the fever set in yesterday. before White got a chance to enter the ring, for he might have been injured perma- nently. Welsh came in from Oceanport, N. {J., where he had been training, last i night, and was fit as a fiddle. He was cragrined to learn that White had { been taken ill, and immediately sent | his sympathy to the Chicago boxer. Walsh asserted that he was willing to meet White just as soon as Charlie i is again in condition for a battle. Great Opportunity for Willie. While Welsh will not meet White, he may have even a harder time with Beecher, a boxer whom he would make a grave mistake to underrate. Beecher does not lay claim to clever- ness, but he can fight—that’s an oft aemonstrated fact. He spends littla time in cream-puff sparring and can hit like the best of them. He is sure ot force Welsh to fight a ttop speed all the time, for he has suddenly been ! Federals haven't launched their CASH IN ADVANCE. LUSH WANTS BRIDGEPORT. Anxious to Manage Federal Minor League Club in That City. In a story in the New York Préss yesterday it was stated that Billy Lush wants to start a Federal league club in Bridgeport. Lush is said to be interested in the formation of the new minor league circuit which will include cities in this section. He has applied directly to President Gil. more for a franchise. Billy, who is a Bridgeport boy, is baseball coach at New York univer- sity at present. After leaving the big leagues he coached the Yale squad and alsa managed Montreal one season. The winter league writers have certainly treated them handsomely. league circuit BOULTES RECOMMENDS UMP. Manager Jake Boultes of the Bridgeport club has written to Presi- dent O'Rourke, recommending Sam Dolis of St. Louis for a position on the Eastern Association umpire staff. Dolis has worked in semi-pro games in St. L.ouis for several yvears. Tom Connery and George Metsger, two old Hartford stars, also vouch for Dolis. Boultes, who is spending the winter in St. Louls, doesn’t say any- thing about himself. BPORTS RED HELD IS CANNED. Red Held, who did fine work as umpire in the Eastern association in 1912, has been released by the Pacific Ccast league., This was because the league decided to abolish the double umpire system. Held was regarded highly in the Coast league, but the officials decided to keep Californians on the staff in preference to outsiders, sc Held is without a job. The Eastern assoclation could use him. WHERAS the Emmett Club learned with deep regret, that death has claimed our brother THOMAS EGAN, whom the members of this Club have always held in the highest esteem and loved with deepest affection. BE IT RESOLVED therefor, that while bowing in submission to the will of Almighty God, we publicly express | the great sorrow that has befallen his relatives, his friends and ourselves by removing from our ranks one, who more than any one member has aided us in the furtherance of the principles for which this Club was founded Although not born on Trish soil, our parted brother was imbued with un- swerving love for the land of his fathers and unceasing zeal for the promulgation of the principles for which Robert Emmett, in the words of Abraham Lincoln, “gave the last full measure of devotion.” Brother E n's kindly and cheerful disposition, his courtesy in his ings with us, and the loyal and faith- ful attention which he devoted to the duties of the office of Financial Sec- retary for the past five years shall ever enshrine him in our memories. The ties of fellowship and friendship, which grew up between us, as strong as those which bind blood brothers, but make our loss the greater. BE IT FURTHER RES token of our sorrow, that these resolu- tions be spread upon the records and that the raphernalia of this Club be draped in urning for a period of thirty days and that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the relatives of our deceased brother. The dving National Roller Polo league had another spasm Sunday and New Bedford was kicked out without mercy, thus reducing the circuit to four teams, which is next to no polo league at all. The cities now repres- ented are Provindence, Brockton, Tezunton and Fall River.. Players who were on the New Bed- ford payroll will be used to plug up weak spots in the other clubs. Bob Griffith has been assigned to Provi- dence, replacing Neil Pierce. Ferdie Harkins and Barney Doherty were awarded to Fall River, replacing Steve Pierce and Paul Gardner. Kid Will- iams also goes to Fall River. AN’'S CHICKFNS WIN. Representative Samuel G.
