Salem, Mass., Jan. 22.—Salem was threatened with another conflagra- tion last night and it was only by the aid of apparatus from many rounding cities and towns that the flames were confined to the Leavitt block in the heart of the business\ district, at a loss estimated at $250 000, Chief William O. Arnold, and five firemen were overcome by smoke and cut by falling glass, but after receiv- ing treatment at the hospital were able to resume duty. In this block was the HEssex house, the largest hotel in the city. The seventy-five guests were warned to leave in time to save most of their personal property. The block, a four was located at the corner of Essex and St. Peter streets. The fire started in the basement of the Cobb, Bates & Yerxa grocery store. The loss was the greatest that the city has suffered since the con- flagration of June 15, 1914, when more than $3,000,000 worth of prop- erty was destroyed.
