" WHAT IWO PLAGUE - INFEGIED RMS DID fave Been Fomd (0 Have Contracted Discase. On September 1914, two plague infected rats were taken in snap traps at 1013 Magazine street, New Crleans, Louisiana. The premises situated there, a combined stable, junk ware- house and residence, were entirely surrounded by a high brick wall. | Owing to the condition of the pace ' and the. nec ty for immediate, thorough rat-proofing, the were vacated and ordered pending completion of work. The residential portion of the building was fumigated with eighty pounds of sulphur and the entire prémises disinfected by sprayving with a two per cent. solution of Kerosene emulsion. : The following morning the work of demolition was begun with the intent of thoroughly destroying rat harbor- ing places from ground to roof. When the ground floor of the resi- dence was removed fifty-four rats were killed: of these twenty plague infected. the ease with which plague may be transmitted by the fleas from rat to | man, it seems remarkable that people should have lived over such a hot- bed of infection without contracting _the disease. because of the large number of rats that accommodated the excess population from dead rodents, That | the infection was of recent origin was shown by the number of plague in- fected rats still alive. It was like living over a vglcano which was on the eve of eruption. All evidences of a stable were re- moved and on the bare ground was laid the concrete floor of a thor- oughly rat-proof structure for the stock. From this floor to the ceiling of the galvanized iron feed room on the floor abve no effort was spared to make the building impervious to rats seeking to gain entrance by gnawing, burrowing, climbing or jumping. The stableman’s residence was next paved and the walls fillled with con- crete to such a height that even the father of all rats could not have ftound entrance. In the junk house which occupied the right wing of the same building, thirty-six rats were killed, of which sixteen were plague infected. Dogs were an efficient aid .in killing these. When floors were torn up, rats scat- tered in all directions. The work of rat-proofing continued steadily and the premise was fast as- suming a - satisfactory appearance' when a most interesting discovery in- tervened. After the death of all the rats, mice were frequently seen and caught. These were being examined carefully and on. Octoher. 16,1814, one .was fclind - plague sinfected. = The fleas which' escaped death with the rats were compelled to seek other hosts and they penetrated the recesses and premises closed were | Appreciating ! The moment you applyv bold-sul- phur to an itching or broken out skin, the itching stops and healing begins, | says a renowned dermatologist. Thisg remarkable sulphur made (into a thick cream effects such ! prompt relief, even in aggravated Ec- zema, that it is a never-ending source of amazement to phyiscians. For many vears bold-sulphur has occupied a secure position in the treatment of cutaneous eruptions by reason of its cooling, parasite-destroy- ing properties and nothing has ever been found to take its place in re- lieving irritable and inflammatory af- fections of the skin. While not al- ways establishing a permanent cure, yet in every instance, it immediately subdues the itching irritation and heals the Kczema right up and it is often years later before any erup- tion again manifests itself. Any good druggist will supply an | ounce of bold-gulphur, which should be applied to the affected parts like | the ordinary cold creams. It isn’t un- i'pleasant and the prompt relief af- forded s very welcome, particularly !\when the Hezema 1is accompanied with torturous itching. (T | & OPEN NOSTRILS!
