Be- cause of their greater output, $300 of this tax will be paid by two man- ufacturers, Willilam G. Muller and Muller. Considerable dis adhesive it vear, which fh in the city’s s provided for .passed by con- ésident Wilson. ¢ ‘already in ef- stamp taxes are ¢ cases will fall e, citizens and | “effect until De- is felt by these two manu- facturers. The tax is based on last vear's output, which makes the tax $150 each. However, this vear has sgen: a falling off in business and it is believed their output will be so as to bring their business into the $30 a vear class. It is therefore seen that he difference of $120 is practically a tax on past production. The man- ufacturers feel that the tax should be graded so as to make this difference less. The price. of tobacco is any form, no doubt will rise as a result of the taxes. The tobacco tax is computed on a basis of annual sales and tabacco dealers, manufacturers and retailers must all pay a tax on their sales. To- | bacco dealers whose annual receipts man- | exceed $200 must pay a tax of $4.80 | each, which will increase New Brit- ain’s'share of the war tax by $250. Amusements Taxed Heavily. Amusements will be taxed heavily and may result in increased prices in theaters and in pool, billiard and bowling establishments. Three of New Britain's theaters probably will be taxed $100 each and the ather two $50 each, or a total of $400. This tax is based on the seating capacity. The tax on bowling alleys and billiard rooms is $5 a table or alley. Bs- timating one hundred tables and fou teen alleys in the city, the tax will amount to $570. The state tax on pool and billiard tables is only $2. The revenue from the tax on drinkables sold in New Britain can hardly be estimated. The principal feature of the law is the tax on beer, which will be £1.50 a barrel, or fifty cents more than is imposed under the law that existed up to October 21, when the war tax on drinkables went into ‘effect. The tax is a stamp rev- enue, and is to be imposed on “all beer, lager beer, ale, porter, and other similar fermented liquor, brewed, manufactured, sold or stored in ware- feally impossible fime the total hich New Brit- landa indirectly, ari be counted | 00 in stamp of the items | fxes, taxes on | he tax which its capital, in- and undivided | gsatisfied. jeven cigar BACK. One Cent Telephone Tax. The telephone and telegraph tax probably comes closer to the average man on the street than ang) other. This tax goes intejeffect Dedefnber 1 and is ingluded in tHe stamp' taxes listed in schedule A. The Southerm New England Telephone company has not yvet made an announcement of its plans for collecting the telephone tax of one cent a message, but the 'law i which follows, provides that the com- pany shall collect the tax from the | person paying for the message: “It shall be the duty of every per- son, firm, or corporation owning or operating any . telegraph or telephone line or lines to make within days after the expiration of eacn month a sworn statement to the col- ! of internal revenue in each of respective districts, stating the number of dispatches, messages, or conversations originated at each of their respective exchanges, toll sta- tions, or offices, and transmitted thence over their lines during the preceding month for which a charge of fifteen cents or more was imposed, and for each of such messages or con- versations the said person, lector son paying for the message or conv sation a tax of one cent in addition to the regular charges for the message or conversation which tax the 4 person, firm, or corporation shal turn pay to the said collector of int nal revenue of their respective d tricts.” The law exempts telegram, tele- pitone and other company messages Learing on the affairs and service of thecompany and also all messages by government officials on official busi- ness. Inasmuch as long distance calls are the only ones which come under this provision of the law, it is not likely that the added expense and trouble ‘to the telephone companics will be very great. The conference committee changed the telephone and telegraph tax to require the company to collect it from the ‘“person paying for” the message, in lieu of the word ‘“sender.” The first special tax on banks will be based on the capital, surplus and undivided profits for the preceding fiscal year ended June 30, 1914, and will be eight-twelfths of one dollar per thousand to cover the eight re- maining months of the tax vear end- ing June 30, 1915. The tax is due now, but the procedure of making return, assessment and payment awaits the promulgation of rules by the treasury department. The tax will have to be paid until January 1, 1916. or fourteen months in all. The rate is $1 per thousand of capital. The National bank will be assessed $600 and the New Britain Trust company $500 in w tax.
