C., Aug. 21.—The destructive May beetless, or so called Juhe bugs, as was previously pre- dicted by the United States depart- ment of agriculture, were extremely abundant the past spring in northeast- ern Towa, the southern part of Michi- gan and northern Ohio; also in north- eastern Pennsylvania, southeastern New York, parts of Connecticut and New Jersey. This is indicative of a great abundance of white grubs in 1915, and judging from the greater abundance of beetles in most of these sections this spring than three years ago, the grub injury will be even greater than in 1912, when it caused n¥any millions of dollars damage, IF is of greatest importance, the depart- ment’s specialists say, that farmers properly handle their flelds this fall and next spring to prevent a repeti- Brass Beds Guaranteed lacquer, in new and attractive designs: $18.50 Beds, sale price ..$15.00 $23.50 Beds, sale price ..<$19.50 $26.50 Beds, sale price ..$22.50 $29.50 Beds, sale price ..$25.00 $36.00 Beds, sale price 2 $43.00 Beds, sale price $50.00 Beds, sale price ..$42.00 tion of the enormous losses occasioned in 1912, Injury can be reduced to & minimum by adopting the following practices: Have Three Years of Life. In the sections above mentioned the important economic species have a three year life cycle, that is, beetles appearing in the spring of 1914 de- posit eggs which hatch about a month after being laid. The young grubs feed on roots and decaying matter, but seldom do damage dur- ing their first year. However, the following year (1915 in the case of the destructive brood under discus- sion) they are larger and feed al- most entirely on living roots, pre- ferably corn, timothy, potatoes, strawberries, etc., causing great loss when abundant. The following spring (1916) they feed more or less but by June 1 or shortly there- after they make earthen cells, be- come semi-dormant and in a fortnight or longer change to brown pupae, and a month later to adult beetles, in which condition they remain in the soil until the next spring (1917). The beetles lay their eggs in lana covered with vegetation at the time of their flights (May and’ June), conse- quently lands in small grain, timothy, and such crops, which cover the ground, as well as land overgrown with weeds at that time, are most likely to be infested 'the following vear. It is also noticeable that ground nearest timber will be most heavily infested, other conditions be- ing equal, since the parent beetles feed on tree follage and do not fly DULUTH IMPERI: FLOUR -Price §13.50 grade, Sale Price 6x9 Body Brussels Rugs, regular §17 grade, Sale Price . §-3x10-6 Tapestry Bruss (‘l< Rugs, regu- lar §12.50 and $13.50 grade, Sale $10.50 Rugs, regular Sale Price Axminster $19.50 glade 8-3x10-6 $17.50 and 9x12 Rugs, Extra Qual regular $25 9x12 Axminster Rugs, regular §23 grade, Sale Price 9x12 Wilton Rugs, grade, Sale Price 9x12 Wool and Fibre $8.50 grade, Sale Price. ... 9x12 Tmported Grass Rugs borders, l(‘)zular 37 50 Price WRI TING DFSK» Ladies’ oak and mahogany Writing Desks, straight and colonial style; one, two and three drawers: $9.50 Desks, Sale Price $11.50 Desks, Sale Price . $13.50 Sale Price Sale Price Sale Price . Methods of Preventing Pest. Fields likely to be infested grubs should be thoroughly plowed between September 15 and October 10. The date of plowing will depend on latitude and the weather con- ditions for the grubs go down as cold weather approaches and it is desirable to plow the flelds just before they go down when possible. If the grubs are abundant, hogs should be allowed to run in the field wherever this can ba done;’ chickens and turkeys are also | valuable aids if allowed the run of | newly plowed ground. If it is imprac- ticable to make use of hogs to rid the infested fields of grubs, a deep and thorough disking should follow the plowing and in 1915 only crops least susceptible to injury, such as small grains, buckwheat, clover, vetch, etc,, should be planted, and by no means sHould susceptible crops such as corn, timothy, and potatoes be planted. While fall plowing should be practiged and is of great value for | destroying grubs, nevertheless it can- not be depended upon solely to cradicate grubs. Corn flelds which were kept cultivated and free from an undergrowth of weeds in May and June of 1914 may, with reasonable safety, be planted to corn or potatoes | in 1915, although it is advisable to inspect the field first for grubs. While it is not ordinarily advisable to fol- low corn after corn, nevertheless it is important at this time, in those | sections where the grub will be abun- dant, to adopt this rotation for the coming year, even though it may be- with | John Three-Piece Parlor Suites AUGUST SALE PRICES Covered $36.50 Suites $45.00 Suites $59.00 Sulites $89.00 -Suites $100.00 Suites $115.00 Suites $120.00 Suites in silk plush, for this sale. .. for this sale... for sale... this s this sa for for for Mission Library Chairs FUMED OAK FINISH Arts and Crafts Dutch Furniture, for construction Chairs and Rockers upholstered in genuine goat skin range from $9.00 to $35.00, during this big August sale.
