The most important meeting ot the common council that has been held this year will take place tonight when Mayor Quigley will read a spe- cial message on New Britain's sewer system. It is expected that the mayor will recommend many changes in the sew- er beds in Berlin and it is sald that the expense of making the changes recommended will be in the vicinity of $500,000. It is claimed that the sewer beds are not performing their function properly and are nét caring for the sewage of the city to the extent ex- pected of them. Mayor Quigley has had the advice of a sewage expert from New York and his recommenda~ tions will be incorporated in the may- or's message. WITH THE SCHOOL BOARD The teachers committee of the school board met yesterday and decid- ed to recommend the engagement of | Miss Catherine Kelly of Newton to teach In the sixth grade in the Smal- ley school and Miss Margaret Barrows for the sixth grade of the Rockwell school. Miss Kelly has been teach- ing in Glastonbury. Miss Barrows' home is in St. Johnsbury, Vt. The committee on school accomo- dations will recommend the purchase of two portable school houses at a cost of $1,350 each at the regular meeting of the school board Friday afternoon. == | DROWNED WHILE “SHING ‘Waterbury Man Loscs Life When Boat . Upsets—Companion Rescued. ‘Waterbury, July 8.—The body of Charles Krause, forty and married, of Orange street, who was drowned in Lake Quassapaug early this morning, had npt been recovered up to noon. Krause and a companion, John Vas- sar, had been out fishing, and it is claimed had been rather bolsterous during the evening. About 2 o’clock this morning the boat in which they sat upset, and both were thrown into the deep lake, Their cries attracted the attention of members of the Colonial club, who rushed out in boats to their assistance. But before they arrived Krause had gone down to his death. Vasser was pulled aboard, but was unable to tell clearly just what caused the upset. MUNICIPAL MATTERS. Councilman D, B. Marwick, Coun- cilman T. J. Coyle and Tax Collector Bernadotte Loomis were appointed by the committee on supplies and print- ing last night to look up a safe for the tax collector’s office. The finance committee approved the following bills last night: Fire, 3513,36; police, $855.76; street sprink- ling, $2,043.40; street improvement, $2.88; street lighting, $1,782.29; sub- ways, $14.05; parks, $593.2 ity hall, $882.21; health, §$1,170.40; charity, $3,669.69. The committee held up the bills of the United Electric Light and Water company because of the alleged poor service, A rebate may be demanded.
