Eccles, W, Va., April 30.—After 24 hours of exhausting effort, Chief Henry and a party of West Virginia mine inspectors early today reached the bottom of shaft No. 5 of the New River Collieries company, where 178 miners were buried by an explosion last Tuesday. They found little gas and no damp, and expressed the belief that conditions were such that some of the entombed miners may still be alive. Tt was almost daybreak when the news came from the tipple that the cage was on its way to the bottom. The inspection at the bottom was brief, and the inspectors, who had worked all night, were hoisted to the top to prepare for the further explora- tion that was to begin as soon as the rescue men could be taken down. Chief Henry said he did not think the mine was on fire at any point, and he expected to find some of the men alive, Many of the mines in the district closed yesterday, and the miners and their familiies joined the people of Eccles in their weary watch for news. Governor Hatfleld, who returned to Charleston last night is expected here today and will personally .assume charge of the doctors who have hur- hied here to care for such of the men as may be brought out of the mine alive. J. W. Paul, chief engineer of the Pittsburg station of the bureau of mines, descended the shaft early in the forenoon in company with gov- ernment rescue men. They had pro- ceeded only a short distance from the bottom when they found six bodies huddled together and so badly burned that identification was impossible, Penetrating further into the galleries, they located other bodies. Soon after- wards the first bodies were hoisted out and placed in a temporary morgue. The crowd made a rush for the tipple, but was held back by deputy sheriffs and guards. Fans were at once started in the hope that the entries could be cleared of gas and the pumps were set in motion so that the rescue parties could reach the farthest recesses of the mine. It is thought that by afternoon progress will have been such as to determine definitely wheth-| er any of the miners escaped. {f 1 wil. , and interesting subjects. 7 Women everywhere are talking about Today’s Magazine, the 'big, practical, ‘hélpful, artistic, handsomely illustrated ;and indispensable fashion, fancy work, housekeepers and mother’s guid%. Palmer of Bridgeport in Main Bout at Lenox A, C. Meriden, Conn., April 30.— The Lenox Athletic club will hold its monthly smoker at Lenox hall, Olive street, tonight, and Judging from the advance sale of tickets, as given out by the president, the hall will be filled to its capacity. This club really deserves to be greeted by a crowded house for the way it has run off these affairs. The public has received more for its money than anywhere else in the state and that is saying a whole lot. For the main attraction’ the club has matched up Eddie O’Brien aof New Haven and Bud Palmer of Bridgeport. This should be a fine ex- hibition as both boys are about even- ly matched. They will weigh in at 133 pounds, For another attraction the club has rematched Young Barbour of Waterbury with Kid Rocco of the same burg. These two boys live in different sections of the town and there is great rivalry between them. They put up a good exhibition at the last smoker and this should prove as good if not better. Then there is Chic Carbon, the un- defeated 116 pounds champion of ‘Waterbury. He is maiched to box Young Phelan of “Waterbury, whom many remember from the fine exhibi- tion he gave against Barbour at the opening show of the club in October, 1913. This should also prove to be a well matched bout, as both boys are confident of a victory. EASTERN ASSOCIATION. Yesterday’s Results. New Haven-Waterbury, rain. Springfield 2, Bridgeport 0.
