MACHIAS SAILS FROM NEW HAVEN TONIGHT State Naval Mitia to Doliver Ves:ol at New York Navy Yard. New Haven, April 26.—Commander Ebenezer J. Hill, Jr.,, on the Connecti- out naval militia, received definite orders from the navy department last night to take the U. S. S, Machias to the New York navy yard and there tu¥n the vessel oveér to the comman- dant of the yard. She will' then be assigned to the special squadron or- ganized under orders of the navy de- partment which has already been designated for serviee in Mexican waters. The big new super-dread- nought New York is the flagship of the special squadron and Rear Ad- miral Winslow will be in command. Sails This Evening. The Machias will sail from New Haven tihs evening for New York. On the trip to the New York havy yard she will be in command of Commander Hill-and the regular of- ficers of the Connecticut naval militia On board will be a detall of ten men from the Second or New Haven di- vision of the militia, and twelve from the First or Hartford division with the regular ship's complement of fourteen mén and ten engineers. There will be no detall, probably, from the Third or Bridgeport divi- sion. After delivering the vessel over to the commandant of the New York navy yard the Connecticut men will come home by train. It is planned now that they will reach their homes sometime on Monday. Regret Is Exproessed. In the orders issued to Commander Hill the navy department expressed regret that it was obliged to take the ship from Connecticut without or« derinig the Connecticut naval militia to come, too, but it is explained in that in view of the fact that the pres- tdent has not yet issued a call for the volunteer and militla forces the navy department has no authority to | ask the naval militia to go along. The officers and men of the naval militia feel more regret over that situation than the navy department does. The state brigade of tars is all ready for service, however, and if the call ¢omes later the men will be ready to leave for any place they may be assigned to within a few hours. Everything Is' Ready. While the Machias will not sail un- til this evening, it is declared that everything is practically in readiness for the trip. ; Following is the text of the tele- gram received last night by Com- mander Hill ordering the delivery of the Machias: Washington, D. C., April 24. Navy department regrets the ne- cessity of the withdrawal of Machias from Connecticut naval militia. Re- quest that she be deltvered at New York navy yard Monday, April 27, Glad to have Connecticut Naval militia deliver Machias. The Machlas accompanies special squadron. Naval militia has not been called out and cannot accompany fleet. Will you de- liver Machias under above condi- tions? Answer. DANIELS, To this Capt. Hill replied, “Yes.” So far as the militla men here can learn this is the only vessel of a militia command that has been sum- moned into service, the other gun- boats being In regular government service.
