C. GILLETTS SPLENDID ADDRESS AT HOME PRODUCTS DINNER LAST NIGNT (Continued from Page 4.) 1 am proud to say that in my opin- ion Tampa Board of Trade is en- titled to all credit, for starting the movement and placing confidence behind it resulting in ' Hillsbor- ough's fine system of vitrified brick roads. 1 was on a committee of the Board of Trade which was instruct- ‘ed to investigate the cost of main- tenance of our poor roads and re- jsult of this investigation revealed 1lhe startling information that ;Hillsbnrough county was expending, 1 believe, $140,000 per annum in llhe up-keep and building of the' worthless highways which then ' prevailed. Shortly thereafter the Board of Trade of Tampa appointed a committee of prominent citizens ,and this committee working in con- {junction with the county commis- | sioners went before the people and Iadvouted her million dollar bond i‘““e which was carried by a large lmajorlty. The saving thus effected lto Hillsborough county today not }nnly provides the interest on her bond issue but also a comfortable is(nking fund for the retirement of | her bonds. {1 have attended good roads meet- ings in Polk county on numerous {occasions and whenever the LAKELAND MEN RESPOND LIBERAL) 10 CALL OF COMMERCIAL SPIRIT The enthusiasm and “Lakeland Spirit” that is present in the re-or- ganization of the Board of Trade, and its conversion into a Greater Chamber of Commerce was never more strongly manifested than when, at 9:30 this morning about 50 of the busiest business men in town reported promptly for service in making a canvass in the interest of the movement. This force had previously been formed into some dozen or more committees, - with their work cut out for them, and these sallied forth with a confidence and enthusiasm that must have been infectious; for when the workers re- assembled for luncheon at the Colon- fal Cafe some two hours later, they had secured 83 new memberships, representing pledges agsgregating $4,980. Hardly a man approached failed to cheerfully subscribe to the movement, and the progress of the various committees was, in each in- stance, what might be called a tri- umphal march. This is the first day of three days of actual campaigning, and the re- salts so far have been most gratify- ing. Tomorrow morning, at 9:30, Chamber of Commerce rooms, and devote the time until luncheon to a further canvass. They will meet again at 12:30 tomorrow for lunch- eon at the Colonial Cafe, where they will make their reports and plans for Friday's final clean-up. There is a splendid spirit of co- operation evident among the work . ers, met by responsiveness upon the part of the business men approached, which augurs well for the great and lasting commercial structure to be built by this movement. e e — through your towns and you will REAL ESTATE TRANSFERS witness an influx of homeseekers and investors beyond your fondest| H, expectation.
