The Evening Telegram Published every afternoon from The Telegram Euilding, Lakeland, Fla. Entered in the postoffice at Lake- land, Florida, as mail matter of the second class. ST M. F. HETHERINGTON, EDITOR SUBSCRIPTION RATES One year ..... ...$5.00 Six months . Three months Delivered anywhere within th; 1imits of the City of Lakeland for 1 cents a week. From the same office s issued THE LAKELAND NEWS, A weekly newspaper giving a resume of local matters, crop conditions, county affairs, etc. Sent anywhere for $1.50 per year. o = T d has the finest auditor- jum in the state,” truthfully afiiirms the Clearwater. Sun, and that paper urges Clearwater to build one just like it. “Lakelan -———— We think it safe to say that the true South Florida spring has :t last arrived, but the tourists will be wise to bear in mind that there al"e ample quantities of pneumonhn weather still held in stock in the states north of the Potomac and the Ohio. o——— The Sunrise, Fred DeBerry's pa- per down in Tampa, had the follow- ing to say in the last issue about Hon. H. H. Drane of this city: i «Hon. H. J. Drane of Lakelan has been elected to the Presidency of the Florida Fire Insurance Peo- ple. Senator Drane is one of Flor- {da’s brainy men; he has been un- uccessful in business, but usually 8! has always found time to lend a helping hand to the upbuilding of Lakeland, Polk County, South Flor- ida and the State at large. Herbert Drane, as his friends know him, has a heart too big for the measure- ments of puny man; he is charitable, in fact this, too, is a strong item of his makeup. He is thoroughly demo- cratic, and should the people of his district see fit to elevate him to a seat in Congress he would undoubt- edlq make them a good representa- tive. Mr. Drane has no tom-fool ideas, but is a plain, successful busi- ness man and profound thinker, con- servative and reliable. Florida un- doubtedly has many good things in store for Herbert Drane. [P N — Neither criticism, nor abuse, nor prejudice can stay the onward march of the commission form of govern- met. Nearly every week we hear of some city, large or small, in some part of the United States adopting this new system of municipal gov- ernment, and the latest to head in that direction is St. Augustine in this State. They are preparing to adopt it in that city and there seems to little or no opposition. There {8 a growing conviction every- where that the new way makes for efficiency and the elimination of ward politics and politicians, and all the wire_pulling, corruption and graft which that implies. The com- mission system is far from perfect and will take on many improve- ments as time progresses, but it simplifies government wonderfully right from the start and clears the atmosphere of the fog of peanut politics so that the people can see every part of the machinery and dring to quick account those who wre not doing their duty. ————— Some of these days the Torrens system of registering land titles is going to prevail all over this coun- try and the present cumbrous, costly and inadequate method will pass ./ into the limbo of primitive things . discarded by the human race as it * mdvances in intelligence and civili- ) £ ity in the legislature. ‘most legislators take it, doubt if Bro. Langford is of that zation. Anm effort to introduce the Torrens system into Florida will be made at the approaching session of the legislature, but as very few peo- ple know anything about it yet and its adoption would overthrow ways and customs and crude machinery entrenched in centuries of use, the attempt will fail ths time. But the Torrens system is on the way and it will arrive in due season. 1t it is to be trench warfare be- tween the St. Petersburg Independ- ent and the Clearwater Sun we may look for the wusual deadlock in such cases and a protracted period of unpleasantness, but if submarines, floating mines, aeroplanes and Zepp- elins are used the issue may be more quickly determined. Here is an elegant opportunity for Straub, a triend to both parties, to volunteer as an intermediary and pacificator and nip a threatening situation in the bud and we hope he'll do it. Blessed are the peacemakers! IR S, W. C. Optimistic onmmm.um & country through having the good Polk county universe. “Jimmy G.” has a particular and ticklish job with the Lakeland Elks’ Minstrel Show in that he has to “hold” the audience while the as- sembled company gets on the stage. Just how the company is going to eget on the stage and just how “Jimmy G.” will hold the audience must remain a secret until the fate. ful evening. But that “Jimmy G. will be sufficient unto the responsi- bilities thrust upon him those who have seen “Jimmy G.” manage the Elks’ ball team are certain. Local fans well remember how “Jimmy G.” marshalled the FElks’ cohorts not so long ago, marched them on to— fileld, did valiant battle with the Louisville Colonels and only missed beating them to a (pulp by a narrow margin of forty- eight runs. It was Captain “Jimmy G.” at short-stop who really saved the Elks’ team from an inglorious finish. His playing was like noth- ing ever seen ona local diamond be- fore or since and was something for fathers to tell to their children un- to the third and fourth generation. In making his maiden speech be- fore the Lakeland public it is opined that “Jimmy G.” will surround him- self with histronic honors just as he won fame and glory while leading his men at the rout on -Flela. “Jimmy G.” is the mew Exalted! Ruler of Lakeland Lodge B. P. 0. E. No. 1291, holding the position of exalted ruler for the second time in his career in Elkdom. He first came to Lakeland from Mobile as the representative of the Gurley Construction Company and after he had discharged his duties with that concern decided that he liked Lake- land so well and was so much at home here that he ought to become a fixture. He is now secretary of the Lakeland Manufacturing Com- pany and probably has more friends here than any one whose residence in the premier city of Polk county covers such a brief span of years. As before mentioned, Captain “Jimmy G.” is scheduled for a very ticklish specialty with the FElks’ Minstrels. Those who have most closely followed his career are cheerfully guessing that he will either do better on the stage than he has on the baseball field or he will be shot at sunrise.
