May) JACK CHUNN. In spite of the weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth following the untimely departure of Handsome Harry Hines, the ladies’ favorite of last season’s Elks’ Minstrels, word comes from official sources that it is darkest before the dawn; every cloud has a silver lining and it's a long lane that has no turning. In other words, the fair sex of this com_ munity is advised that Percival Elijah Jack Chunn will be in the line_up of the Lakeland ‘Elks’ Min- strels April 9 at the Lakeland Audi. torium. Although it doesn’t worry him at all, it is an unquestioned fact that, since the departure of Hnnfl-ome: Harry Hines, whose presence is now shedding lustre and distinction upon the good people of Miami, ‘“Jack” Chunn is the best looking man in Lakeland. It is partly because of this fact and partly because he possesses a pure lyric tenor that ‘“‘Jack” h“f been elected to sing a first part solo in the Elks' Minstre] Show of April 9. “Jack™ was elected unanimously and accepted the honor with alacrity and quiet dignity, but his acceptance brought the management to the mighty decision as to whether or no General Chunn should appear in the conventional black face or in his own, natural, pristine beauty, This statement is made on the highest authority, however. No matter what the facial makeup is in which General Jack appears he will not be permitted to appear in tights. The question has been put to a vote and the majority of mem. bers of Lakeland Lodge B. P. 0. E. No. 1291 have put the kibosh on the proposition, There are those who claim that it is professional sic limbs in concealment, but be in the Elks' Minstrel cast will do his singing and his other minstrel stunts in long pants. “Jack” can justly lay claim to Sage, | being an interstate favorite since he vited to attend. Mr. | was born partly in Tennessee and|English. Following are the su partly in Kentucky and came to LIST CAME OF THE SEASON TONORROW WHEN COLONELS PLAY THE CUBAN REDS The Cuban Reds are billed to meet the Colonels this afternoon at the Ball Park. Only two more games remain on the Louisville team's list here in Lakeland. The attendance was good at the games with the Cubs, those in Lakeland be- ing ahead of the games at Tampa, showing that our people are taking livelier interest in the pastime than the fans of the metropolis. Never- theless, the guarantors of the base- ball fund will have to meet a deficit, as unusually backward weather mili_ tated against the attendance at the earlier games. | What benefit Lakeland will get out of this visit of the Colonels and the resultant widespread advertising in the larger northern cities will be the development of time. Last year, the Colonels trained at Fort Myers. Columns of publicity about the West Coast and the Lee county seat were the result. This year, Fort Myers has enjoyed remarkable growth, an entire new block of buildings in the heart of the city attesting to its solid advance. Lake- land was certain to have gone ahead in material progress, even without the advertising, but good advertising never hurt a citizen or a community, and the money paid out by our pa. triotic citizens will have been a wise expenditure, as time surely will prove. Now, back to the baseball games. The Cubans, as every one knows, are | | | i remarkably good fielders. While they cannot hit as well as the league players, they are likely at any time to score a victory on their superb fielding, as their pitchers ae always willing to take a chance. These last two games will give everybody in, Lakeland a chance to help defray the | expenses of the team’s visit. The real Lakeland weather, exemplified today, should help the size of the crowds. After tomorrow's game, the Ken- ! tuckians will go to Jacksonville. | After one game there they play two at Atlanta and then go to Iaumvllle! to meet Detroit. | | . Saturday's game at Tampa was won by Chicago, 13 to 9. Louisville made five runs in the first lnnlng{ and had the bases filled when thel side was retired. This should have sewed up the game, but throughl carelessness due to overconfidence | the Cubs were permitted to tie it up. Right field at Plant Field is a diLl ficult spot to play, due to the sun. Bert Daniels lost a fly which big George McConnell, the second Cub pitcher hit out in that direction, and it went for three bases, and really decided the outcome. Osborn also would have caught Zimmerman’s home run on a regular field, as he was near the outer circle when he had to pull up and the ball went over his head. The game today began at 3 o'clock. ———————————————————————————————————— HOLY WEEK SERVICES AT LUTHERAN CHURCH. 7:30 Beginning this evning at home of Mr. and Mrs. F. J.
