In the past ten years the Athletics have been American League cham . pions five times, and have won three out of five world’s series. In 1905 they lost to the Giants, hut that was in the days when “Iron Man"” Mc Ginnity and the peerless Christy Mathewson were at their best, “Matty” shutting out the Athletics no less than three times in that se ries, while McGinnity shut them out once, himself being the loser in a whitewash affair. Rudolph and James were the pitchers who beat them last fall; .indeed, the only de- feats of consequence ever suffered by the Athletics in title games have been by right.handers. “Wallie” Schang, who is first catcher of the Athletics, is here, as well as McAvoy, who also had ex- perience with Baltimore. The Ath letics got Schang by draft from Buf falo, and he is one of the few stars whom Mack did not personally de velop. Schang also is a left-handed hitter. Jack McInnes, who plays first base for the Athletics, is a pronounced left field hitter, like Miller, of the Colonels.
