The big Louisville dailies are all represented here, and the accomplished gentle- men of the press of that city stop- ping with the club in Lakeland send to their papers good stuff every day telling of the Colonels and their do - ings and sayings and incidentally saying pleasant things about our city. Next Monday our puhllclly\ will be nation.wide and al] the big| dailies throughout the country will carry a Lakeland date line, for on that day the Colonels will meet Con - nie Mack's world famed Philadel- phia Athletics at the ball grounds here and from Portland, Me., !o‘ Portland, Ore., and from Duluth to Key West the public will hear about it. On that great occasion it will be the duty as well as the pleas- ure of Lakeland to be present in heavy force and root tumultudously for the Colonels as our home team. —C——— NO SUCH PAPERS IN FLORIDA Doubtless no public man in this State at any period of its history has ever been more considerate of the newspapers of Florida or more courteous to their editors than Sen- ator Fletcher. He is not explo- sive, arbitrary, dictatorial, intoler- ant or high tempered—he is precise- ly the reverse, and understanding, as a man of his intelligence does, the high n on and vast usefulness of the press, it is absurdly unjust to him to picture him not only as an enemy of the newspapers but as one | ready to abri their just rights and restrict their lawful freedom of opinion. ; But Senator Fletcher knows the| decent tations as well as the use- fulness of the press, and merely in. sists that those limitations shall be observed In his recent speech, so savagely criticized, he was referring | to no Florida newspaper, we feel sure, but probably his temper had been taxed by the recent reading of some of ihose flippantly defaming and coarse attacks, with all the bit.y ter, acid quality which cold type im- parts to such effusions, which a cer tain class of newspapers so often in~ dulge in.
